Cowboys 2016 Draft: Four Bargain Running Backs

http://thelandryhat.com/2016/02/27/cowboys-2016-draft-four-bargain-running-backs/

Recently, Dallas Cowboys Executive Vice President and CEO Stephen Jones said that he does not foresee the team being major spenders in free agency. Link

Therefore, the Cowboys might target a running back in the middle to later rounds of the 2016 Draft.

The following is a list of potential running back targets Dallas might consider adding.

Dallas is not going to use pick No. 4 on a running back because there is not a back in this draft worthy of such a loft selection.

Furthermore, the Cowboys have more pressing needs like the pass rush and quarterback that it will likely address in the first round.

So Dallas will either sign a veteran free agent running back like former Chicago Bear Matt Forte or ex Tampa Bay Buccaneer Doug Martin that might be a bargain.

But more likely the Cowboys are going to look to the draft to find a ball carrier to pair with incumbent starter Darren McFadden.

Fortunately, there are a number of quality running backs likely to be available in the middle or late rounds of the draft.

Do not be surprised to see Dallas lined to the following runners over the next two months...

Alex Collins – Arkansas (Projected 2nd – 3rd round)
The last time Cowboys’ owner and general manager Jerry Jones picked a running back from his alma mater the pick was a bust. In 2008, Dallas used the No. 22 overall pick on Arkansas speedster Felix Jones but an inability to stay healthy and overall ineffectiveness made Felix Jones’ time in Dallas unsuccessful.

So fans might be a bit skeptical if the Dallas Cowboys select Collins in round two or three. However, the productive running back looks to be a solid NFL prospect.

Playing in the rugged SEC West, Collins faced some of the nation’s toughest defenses and still managed to gain 5.8 yards per carry and 1,577 yards. However, does Collins’ skill set translate to the NFL game?...

Kenneth Dixon – Louisiana Tech (Projected 3rd – 4th round)
A prospect many fans may not be aware of is one of the most productive backs in recent NCAA history. Louisiana Tech’s Kenneth Dixon amassed 4,483 yards and 72 touchdowns in his four years in college.

Dixon averaged 5.6 yards per carry in his career and rushed for over 1,000 yards in three of his four collegiate seasons (he totaled 917 yards his sophomore season). Now, Dixon is impressing at the NFL Combine.

On Friday, the native of Strong, Arkansas wowed scouts with a 37.5 vertical jump and a 10-foot-1 broad jump. He also displayed impressive lateral quickness in the short shuttle drill (4.28 seconds) and 60-yard shuttle drill 6.97 seconds...

Jordan Howard – Indiana (Projected 3rd – 5th round)
From the football factory that is Indiana University comes a player that could be one of the biggest steals in this year’s draft. Howard has fantastic size at 6-foot-1 and 230 pounds and was one of the most productive running backs in the Big 10.

Last year, Howard totaled 1,213 rushing yards and nine touchdowns. For his career, the Gardendale, Alabama native (who played his first two seasons of college football at the University of Alabama Birmingham) racked up 3,681 yards and 24 scores...

DeAndre Washington – Texas Tech (Projected 6th – 7th round)
The Dallas Morning News has cited Twitter reports that the Cowboys have had informal talks with the productive Texas Tech running back. Despite playing in the pass-happy Kliff Kingsbury offense, Washington became the first Texas Tech running back to rush for 1,000 yards in consecutive seasons in almost two decades.

A prototypical third-down back, Washington caught 124 passes for 1,091 yards in his time in Lubbock. He is also a very shifty runner that is comfortable running between the tackles.

Averaging 5.6 yards per carry, Washington was a do-it-all back in college. However, questions about his size will hurt him in the eyes of many NFL scouts...

I like Wendell Smallwood as an upgrade for Dunbar. Kids been a great runner and a better receiver his 3 years at WVU.

I like this kid A LOT. He's very rugged and tough at the POA. Not worried about the 4.6 at all. Great pick in the 4th round for us, but not the 3rd...that's too high IMO.

Hoping for Dixon in the 3rd

I don't know guys. He's electric in his highlights but he isn't very big and I think we need a bell cow to some extent. I would still prefer a bigger, more physical back like Howard from IU in the 4th round over this kid.

I've seen Washington play his whole career. He does not compare to Dunbar. He's thicker and has huge guns.

I want Henry in the 2nd myself.

Look to the guy who is a good blocker. Barber and Murray were later round guys who we liked for that aspect if their games. We like McFadden for that too. I think we believe that's one aspect of the game that is hardest to develop.

We need one of them. If you spend as much as we have on online we need the running back to go with it.
