A quick look back at the first padded practice

In the first day of fully-padded practice at training camp for the Dallas Cowboys, there were old things, new things, borrowed things, and lots of Blue.

Tyron Smith and the rest of the starting offensive line looked to be in prime shape, particularly in one-on-one drills. Nothing new to report here, just dominance by a unit that we’ve come to expect dominance from. All the running backs had their moments, with Ezekiel Elliott showing the burst and wiggle that made him a first-round pick. This was not unexpected, though Darius Jackson might be a little bit of a surprise given his late sixth-round status. But this is old news. We pretty much knew these guys could play.

Deji Olatoye got by Vince Mayle on a bubble screen and borrowed Lucky Whitehead's cleats after knocking him out of them. Speaking of things borrowed, rookie Anthony Brown made the first interception of camp, diving on a low throw by Tony Romo to Cole Beasley. Significant that it was Romo. Significant that the ball was low in that it probably was meant to be away from a possible pick. Significant that it was Beasley, who is notoriously difficult to cover.

But there were some new things as well. Terrence Williams had a nice leaping hands catch. Rookie Andy Jones has had his name come up more than once in comments on his catching ability and he looks to be making a case for himself. By and large the defense won the team portion of drills, giving the lie to the idea that they are largely and broadly incapable.

The star of the day, however, was unquestionably Morris Claiborne. He reportedly broke up six passes on the day, while working against multiple receivers from both the left and right side. Claiborne seems to be playing with a renewed fire and vigor and if he develops into even a portion of the player the Cowboys envisioned when they traded a first- and a second-round pick for him he can bring a lot of help to a (verbally) beleaguered defense.

Claiborne has always been a good man corner. It's zone coverage where he's been absolutely lost. You must be multifaceted to succeed in this league. If he can become competent in zone coverage, he'll be a good corner. It's rare for it to occur this late in a career, but who knows?

Man please. Always been good at man since when? Letting some Rams scrub we burn him to a crisp in man and many other goofball plays.

And the Claiborne hype train has pulled into the station also. Cowboys Camp Union station for hype trains.

Either get on board or don't...but if you don't get on and get left behind...you can't celebrate the SB win this year....:p

Yep. We were talking about him blanketing Dez in camp three seasons ago. He always shows in camp. He's better in season, too, than his reputation with Dallas fans indicates, but when he does struggle, as you say, it's usually in zone.

Maybe with Jones as a true FS, allowing the SS to do their job. This will allow Claiborne / Carr / Scandrick to be able to play both zone and man better.
I'm not a defensive guru, but does this make sense in the schemes and their abilities on how Rod uses them?

Definitely. Carr would look a lot better if he had better safety play behind. Last year, Church and Wilcox were known primarily for being slow and taking bad angles. That's a horrible combination of characteristics in safeties.

LOL.

We seem to do this every year with players.......... a couple of practices in, Player X looks great! So much better than the previous few years!

Then Player X actually looks the same come game time. Claiborne can defend 50 passes every practice. I am not buying squat until he starts doing it consistently in games. It would be a big boost if he suddenly found his game but I am not holding my breath at this point.

The plan last season was to let Scandrick finally take more of the load and relegate Carr to RCB. With those two and Claiborne, they've got three good man cover CBs they can use much of the time. With Scandrick out, that got taken away.

With Wilcox off the field more and replaced with a guy who can actually take angles, it definitely should help. We'll obviously still see a lot of mixed coverages, but if everybody can stay in the lineup we'll get to see what they were working towards last season.

Of course, this assumes we can manufacture some pressure somehow, too. That's the part we've got to worry about.
