The big-name player still on the board is Boston College’s edge rusher, Harold Landry. He was a player many of us would have loved to have at 19, but instead - nobody touched him in round one. What is going on with that? Well, it appears he has been flagged with medical concerns...

I wonder how far he will fall?

Two other first-round targets who are still on the board are offensive linemen James Daniels and Will Hernandez. Could one of them fall to 50? The New York Giants have the second pick in round two and they need offensive line help so I’d be surprised if they passed up on one of them. Connor Williams at 50 would be a gift for Dallas...

LSU RB Derrius Guice
The first round saw more running backs picked than expected. That Guice is still standing is a bit of a stunner. It’s not that he was a sure first rounder. But with a coveted combination of power and breakaway speed, Guice was widely considered a better prospect than Sony Michel (Patriots, No. 31) and Rashaad Penny (Seahawks, No. 27). Did a controversy over alleged inappropriate questions at the combine have anything to do with his falling stock?

UTEP G Will Hernandez
Hernandez is regarded as a guy who can step in from Day 1 and be an anchor on an offensive line for 10-plus years. Any team looking to strengthen their interior line would be wise to target Hernandez early on Thursday.

Iowa CB Josh Jackson
Jackson’s knock is that he doesn’t have elite speed, which is likely why he wasn’t taken on Thursday. At 6-1, he has excellent size and is considered an elite playmaker with a nose for the ball and outstanding cover skills.

Iowa C James Daniels
Like Hernandez, Daniels looks like a guy who will start in Week 1 this season with the potential to keep his job for a decade. He comes from an Iowa pedigree of producing outstanding NFL lineman and has a first-round grade. If you want a center, come get him.

Landry surprisingly returned to Boston College for his senior year last year when he looked like a potential first-round pick. An ankle injury limited him last season, but doesn’t appear to be a long-term concern for the speedy pass-rusher. While slightly undersized (6-2, 250 pounds) Landry’s athleticism gives him the upside of a tremendous Day 2 value.


South Dakota State TE Dallas Goedert
The draft was light on first-round tight end talent, but Goedert leads the pack on guys who could go early on Day 2. A 6-5 athletic pass catcher, there are questions about his ability to block NFL caliber talent after playing in the Missouri Valley Conference. If he can be effective when called up to block, he could end up being a great second-round value.

Southern Methodist WR Courtland Sutton
Sutton’s not a speedster, but he is that giant (6-3, 218 pounds) you want fighting in the corner of the end zone with smaller cornerbacks on a fade route. Think Plaxico Burress or Muhsin Muhammad. He’s probably not a No. 1, but he has the upside of a high-end No. 2 receiver who quarterbacks will look to in tight spots...

DT Maurice Hurst, Michigan
The defensive tackle from Michigan was one of the first players to be mocked to the Cowboys earlier in the year. After medical tests at the Combine showed concerns with his heart, the star DT has fallen down the draft boards, but he has since been cleared to play football. How far will he continue to fall? It’s tough to say, but Hurst has great initial burst and the strength and toughness to be disruptive in the trenches. Many fans weren’t sold on him being a good target at 19, but at 50 he could end up being the steal of the draft.

While most of Cowboy Nation would love to see the Cowboys select a sexy skill position player, I want them to do the opposite. If the Cowboys want maximum production from their newest first round draft pick, it’s time to beef up the interior line. The front office needs to put another young defensive tackle talent next to our 2016 3rd round draft pick – defensive tackle Maliek Collins. If you believe that defensive tackle Tyrone Crawford’s salary has surpassed his production.

Crawford is scheduled to have a base salary of 6 million this season, 7 million in 2019 and 8 million in 2020. Of course, things can be restructured or Crawford could take a pay cut. It’s just hard to imagine that the Cowboys will be willing to pay that salary to a defensive tackle that isn’t dominant at his position. There are a lot of talented defensive tackles remaining in the 2018 draft. It’s a shame that the Cowboys openly devalue the interior of the defensive line. Great defensive tackles help defensive ends avoid double teams. Great tackles generate pressure up the middle and quarterbacks hate defensive linemen in their face. Finally, great tackles create lanes for middle linebackers to make plays in the backfield. The technical term is – “Keeping your linebacker clean.”

If you’re on the fence and slightly disappointed that the Cowboys didn’t grab a wide receiver, please don’t be. I’m not a fan of the front office, but the Cowboys did good by selecting Vander Esch.

No , you listen , clueless wonder....................................We DON'T HAVE a 1 tech defensive tackle ; we have 3 tech and defensive ends playing the one and that's where our defense gets gashed on running plays straight up the middle..........................(And BTW it's) I-R-V-I-N-G'S (you don't even know the guy's friggin' name) best position is at defensive end , opposite Lawrence , and if the Boys drafted a true 1 tech who plays alongside Collins , that would be a nice front.....................Your suggestion that they draft a 3 tech and just play anybody next to him is absurd and is something a pee-wee coach wouldn't even consider.........................

The problem is he is really best to play a Von Miller type role in a 3-4 defense. For us he would have to either play a 4-3 OLB role, which would minimize his pass rushing skills, or be a situational pass rusher at DE
