I’m talking about that “10 personnel” remark from David Helman. David knows what is important, and for the offense, that is big.

Just in case you are not familiar with the nomenclature for offensive personnel groups, 10 personnel is one running back and no tight ends, which means four wide receivers are also on the field. That is something that was almost never used the past few seasons, because of the presence of Jason Witten. The now-retired tight end was on the field for all but a tiny handful of plays every season. While Witten is already a legendary figure for the Cowboys after his incredible career, his insistence on being there for every play was something of a roadblock to more creative plays. He is gone now, and as is already emerging, we can expect to see a lot of formations that are very popular around the NFL, but that have been missing from Dallas’ repertoire.

During the offseason, we heard repeatedly that the offense was going to be less predictable and more suited to the skill set and style of Dak Prescott. On day one of practices, that has started. 10 personnel puts four receivers in the pattern for Prescott to work with. But that does not mean it is strictly a passing package. Those four WRs spread the defense out, which means fewer defenders in the box. That can open lanes up for Ezekiel Elliott, as well as moving the defensive backs away from the line of scrimmage as they follow those receivers. It is also a great package for the run-pass option, where Prescott can make the read to decide between handing the ball to Elliott or keeping it to throw (or run it himself). It allows the Cowboys to take what the defense gives them, in the sense that they will be more vulnerable to either the run or the pass, and the play call can take advantage of that.

First and second day of TC, clearly this is the offense for the year.

I don’t think they are going to show their plans on the 1st few days of TC.

They actually won’t instill the real stuff until the get back to The Star and have closed practices to the public and media.
Just getting goths basics in at TC. I am sure we will see part what the intended, but not everything.

GUYS I wouldnt get too carried away with 10 personell..It was used quite frequently with the Cowboys when Romo was qb. ACTUALLY Romo cleared the backfield on that play..ALIBI with Witten as a tight end and some without..It has its place, and it also got Romo crunched against Philly...Spreading defenses out is a philisophy, of a veteran team..We will have to see how it works for this team!

lol, what exactly will they be hiding? do tell? Will anyone be shocked if they use a QB to throw to WR? Will anyone be stunned if a RB runs with the ball? What are they going to do, send everyone to the hospital by putting the defensive line on the offense?

There isnt going to be anything none of the coaches in the league wont know will happen. every coach knows the basic concept. its not going to be bring a revelation to the world of sports.

Yeah, i want to see the boring two tightend wing..And i want to see the Cowboys throw out if it. Lol..Really when you say you are a run first team, and you get excited when you clear the backfield and make the qb responsible for his own protection from the blitz..lolol

Well what you just posted Are the basics. What ever point you are trying to make, well it didn’t work.

Empty Backfield is not 10 personnel.

10 personnel is 4 WRs and a RB.

Empty is 3 WRs, 1 TE and a RB lined up as a WR.

When one formation has a TE and the other replaces a TE with Tavon Austin, that means it's not remotely the same unless Witten and Tavon Austin are the same.

SOUNDS good, still want to see 5 Wide every few series, just once...

I for one am expecting a losing season - hope that is enough for Jerry to fire Garrett.

I think we've all kinda been wanting to see a bit more of this just because of the talent with Zeke, our OL, and Daks feet. Especially when defenses go lighter and our OLs ability in space this year.

Now with Tavon and Thompson you can get pretty creative with routes. Zeke's ability to pass protect is also a great attribute in this formation, because you can bet that teams will be trying to send an extra blitzer here, his ability to pick up the blitz will be pretty big.

It also maximizes depth at WR. Letting you create mismatches if a team has weak CB depth or weaker cover LBs/Safeties.

Theres a number of things you can do, but I expect Tavon will earn his snaps in something like this. Even a moments hesitation by a S over the top can lead to a big play. I'm guessing we'll see quite a bit of the speed used at slot running deeper out routes and Go routes.

I'm glad we have some legitimate talent at end and LB, with CBs that can play press man. We're going to have to be able to beat things like double A gap blitzes with defenses playing press man.

Itll be interesting to see how this develops, we have all the pieces to make it work anyway.

Was going to post this article as it gives some insight on how the loss of Witten can actually help us by diversifying the offense. I know a lot of us think the team will do its best gelling come weeks 10+, but I am excited for the first few weeks. I don't think teams will have any idea what to expect from the offense and that's gonna help just like when a rookie enters the league with no tape. If the defense is healthy and playing to its potential, I think we can really sneak up on teams those first few weeks.

One thing the 10 personnel suggests: Dallas will probably carry 6 wide receivers and Tavon Austin as running back with 3 tight ends (Rico won't make it) on the 53 player squad.
