OK I said I would not give an opinion until I see the entire coaching staff and look at management involvement to give my opinion on Cowboys 2020. Well here it is without input from sources in the know:

Been There and Done That -
I have seen this before when Jerry wanted his stadium, In 2002 he met with Parcells while Campo was still coaching. He basically hired Bill Parcells let him upgrade the player personnel department and hire his own coaches with one noticeable left over from Dave Campo staff Mike Zimmer.

Mike McCarthy (M&M) does not have to get rid of an idiot like Larry Lacewell out of the Personnel Dept. He hired 20 coaches (is that an NFL record?). But he did keep what Jerry Jones wanted in Kellen Moore. Leon Lett was a logical holdover as DL coach (he coached under Rob Ryan 3-4 and Rob Marinelli 4-3).

Well Jerry has a Stadium. So, it maybe Super Bowl time. Also M&M and Stephen Jones look like Siamese twins separated at birth. As we had an influx of ex giants and patriots with Parcells, you are now full of Cheese heads with some ties to Saints and 49ers.

It Takes a Village to Raise a Cowboy-
Ok regarding the Coaching Staff, 20 coaches is almost have the 53 man roster. So the teacher to student ratio is low. I like the diversity of African American coaches (10). What is interesting in the additions of some of these coaches is their SEC background with NFL experience (ie. Henry, Wells). However, M&M hiring of Rob Davis as Asst. HC is very interesting and new. Considering he was a Player Personnel Director and player development career, there will be another voice in the draft room in April. That could be interesting as Jerry and Stephen will be out numbered by Davis, McClay, Lionel Vital, and M&M. The scouting staff lost great scouts like Juliff, Abrams, and Ciskowski. However, they have added Davis and Vital with McClay will have a larger voice on draft day. Plus how are you going to develop a locker room when you do not get to say who comes in the locker room?

The GM Has Not Changed -
Jerry needed Jimmy to get him a Super Bowl. He fired him after back to back Super Bowls. He need Parcells to get his stadium. He ran Parcells off by signing "the player" and anointing Romo before Parcells tested him with competition (see Simms and Hostetler). He has a Gold Jacket but no Super Bowls since Jimmy Johnson was the actual GM and he wasted HOF talent with Jason Garrett. So can M&M melt in his mouth and not in his hand to deliver a Super Bowl? If M&M does deliver, is he next to make true "coaches are hired to get fired".

Its About The Players That Can Make Plays -
Dak Prescott, Amari Cooper, Byron Jones are FA. Vander Esch, Smith, and Lee are injury prone LBers. The OL is only long in the tooth at LT. But it is the most important OL position beside C. The Cowboys have not had a dominate DL since Parcells (Ratliff, Spears, Canty, Ware, Hatcher, and Ellis). These are a lot of holes that the GM holds all the answers to the questions. Will Jones sign Prescott, Cooper, and Jones or let either or all walk? Will he hang on to his favorites like Lee and Heath or upgrade? Cowboys have major needs at TE (Jarwin can't block), WR (if you let go Cooper), DE, DT, LB, CB, FS, SS and QB (if you let Dak walk). This is alarming to be in the hands of the man that destroyed the 90's Dynasty in 2 years. Cowboys need play making players like Grant Delpit, Isaiah Simmons, etc. and to keep play making players like Prescott and Cooper. Will Jerry Jones decrease to increase that personnel and coaching talent to make the decisions like Jimmy Johnson and Bill Parcells tenures?

Whether 2002 or 2020, the GM has not changed but the only thing left for him to get is a Super Bowl. So, maybe it is 1990 all over again.

Jerry Jones was inducted as a contributor, mostly on the strength as both an NFL owner/trailblazer and merchandising innovator for the league, and far less for being a general manager. Jones may receive little or zero credit for helping his franchise attain three Lombardi trophies, but he got his gold jacket for reasons not primarily to do with Super Bowls.

What is the significance of 1990?

I wonder if other teams fans compare current teams to past teams as much as cowboys fans do.
If they are "America's" team they do. What the heck does "Make America Great Again" means? Make the Cowboys great again Pleeeeeeeeeeeese!

What is his official title? Well as long as he is GM he is responsible for all Jocks and Socks.

Jerry Jones

Owner / President / General Manager

What is the significance of 1990?
1990, everything was in place for the new regime that built the 90's Dynasty. Jimmy Johnson was Head Coach, Bob Ackles was VP of Player Personnel and John Wooten was Director of Player Personnel. 1989 still had the holdovers of Tex Schramm and Gil Brandt who were fired in time respectively prior to 1990. Even Jerry Rhome was held over from the Landry Staff in 1989. However, the Herschel Walker trade happened after Gil Brandt fired and Tex was long gone to the European League. So 1990 was clean slate slate. Johnson, Ackles, and Wooten are recognize for building the 90's Cowboys Dynasty.

After the Super Bowl in 1992, Jerry Jones started flexing his "money given GM title" by firing Jimmy Johnson's VP of Player Personnel, Bob Ackles, stripping down the scouting staff, which ran off John Wooten, his Director of College and Pro Scouting, and not resigning Emmitt Smith prior to the season of 1993. After the 1993 Super Bowl he fired Jimmy Johnson. Jerry had his Super Bowl so he now wanted full control with all the accolades for the work others did to build the Dallas Cowboys 90's Dynasty.

If this regime gets him a Super Bowl, who will get the accolades after 25 years of no NFC championship games let alone a Super Bowl? If not Jerry Jones, then he is know for revisionist historical moves to make it about him.

Ok, I was unaware of all of those changes from '89 to '90.

I would take 1990 in a minute, if I knew what was coming.

Oh as soon as they drafted Emmitt in 1990 I knew what was coming.

My wife (at the time) thought I was insane as soon as they drafted him. As I shouted out oh hell yes, and jumped out of my chair.
She came out to the living room and said what the hell.

I said Dallas will win the SB in a few years or so. Ans told her why.

Emmitt became her favorite player. As well as mine.

I wonder if other teams fans compare current teams to past teams as much as cowboys fans do.

Other team’s fans haven’t had this one guy GMing all of the place for the last 30 years and not accomplishing anything significant for the last 20 something of those years. So no, I’m sure other team’s fans probably don’t compare their current teams to past teams like we do. Unfortunately we have this one constant that is on our current team and was also on all those failed past teams as well.

We did not win the Super Bowl in 1990 or 2002 so obviously with 2020's fortune undetermined so far for the Cowboys, I have to say, 2020.
