Cowboys 2026 roster rundown: TE Luke Schoonmaker

Likely his last year as a Cowboy. Or will he be a victim of the Turk on cut day? He wasn't ever going to be a big target for Dak because he is too far down the food chain. As the article says, maybe Luke Schoonmaker is still more involved in the TE2 conversation than we think. He has to know his Cowboys career depends on it.

Few Cowboys players need a big 2026 more than TE Luke Schoonmaker, but most of them probably have better opportunities. The former second-round pick is entering the final year of his contract with stalled development and potentially a lower spot on the depth chart. It’s going to be an uphill battle for Schoonmaker in what could be a career-defining season.

Schoonmaker was considered a Day 2 prospect in the 2023 draft class, and that’s exactly where the Cowboys got him as the 58th-overall pick. But Dallas’ need for TE that high was heavily questioned as, the year before, they’d seemed to find a Day 3 diamond with Jake Fergsuon. But with Dalton Schultz leaving in free agency and Ferguson being handed the starting job, the Cowboys felt they needed to hedge their bet both for that year and long-term. So, they spent the high pick on Schoonmaker.

Dallas probably isn’t going to keep four tight ends as they also carry a fullback, and that Hunter Leupke is capable of playing backup TE himself. So both Schoonmaker and Trigg, or some other TE prospect, making the roster is probably not happening without an injury situation.

Maybe Luke Schoonmaker is still more involved in the TE2 conversation than we think. If so, hopefully it’s a sign that he has made some strides in his play and that he and Spann-Ford can improve the overall depth. But if Schoonmaker remains unimpactful in this year’s camp, the Cowboys may finally decide to move on to someone with more future potential.

Thats a bit of a whitewash. That would be like a team taking the consensus 25th ranked player with a top 3 pick, and saying "well, MOST teams had him as a Day 1 player...and that's where he was taken!!!"

Most teams had him in the 90- 120 range. We took him in the 50s

Only Jerruh ranked him that high. A huge over draft....just like Mazi. And surprise surprise....the REAL GMs in the NFL were right. Jerry would be better off just reading Mel Jiper Jr's draft list and using that as his big board.

I am curious to see what he does this year. Ferguson is the presumed starter, and then there's Fant, DJ Rogers, Spann-Ford & Son, & Trigg in camp with Schoon at the TE position.

His numbers have been underwhelming so far. In my opinion he needs to have a career year in catches (at least 30), yards (at least 300), and TDs (at least 3). Failing that, the young lions on the team may push him down the depth chart, and ultimately off the team.

Spann-Ford is the clear-cut TE2, in my eyes. I'm just not sure he could be a full-time option should he need to start. If Ferg goes down, I'd trot out a better receiving TE or go more 3-and 4-wide.

Luke is an inline one dimensional te. A dime a dozen. No need to cut him. Just let him play out his deal. Maybe he overachieves.

Schoonmaker is another example of the Cowboys not getting the guy they wanted in the 1st or 2nd round so they reach for the next guy at that position.

That is the same way we ended up with Tyler Guyton, Kelvin Joseph, and Taco Charlton.

The Cowboys had the #26 overall pick and the Bills drafted Dalton Kincaid with the 25th overall pick. Therefore, the Cowboys reached and took Mazi Smith because DT was another position o need.

The Lions took La Porta with the 34th overall pick and it started a run on TEs. Eight TEs were taken on day #2 of that draft. Only one TE drafted in the top three rounds of that draft has less career receptions than Schoonmaker.

I think Span-Ford is going to end up being the #2 TE.

Schoon is still on his rookie deal. So he will have to clearly be 4th on the depth chart to get cut.

Salary plus bonus is only $1,993,943 this year. Dirt cheap.
