What a depressing loss that was. I know alot of us are down right now, but looking at the standing in the NFC, we are not out of this thing. In fact, I feel better about us now at 4-4 than I did when we were 3-3.
Yes, this team has issues, but so do most of the other teams in the NFC. Lets look at the standings:
W L T |PCT| |PF |PA Team.......... Streak
7 1 0 0.875 234 100 Chicago....... Lost 1
6 2 0 0.750 194 144 N.Y. Giants... Won 5
6 2 0 0.750 198 159 New Orleans... Won 1
5 3 0 0.625 167 164 Atlanta....... Lost 1
4 3 0 0.571 149 177 Seattle....... Lost 2
4 4 0 0.500 223 164 Dallas........ Lost 1
4 4 0 0.500 206 160 Philadelphia.. Lost 3
4 4 0 0.500 130 135 Minnesota..... Lost 2
4 4 0 0.500 137 163 Carolina...... Lost 2
4 4 0 0.500 180 197 St. Louis..... Lost 3
3 5 0 0.375 162 190 Washington.... Won 1
3 5 0 0.375 162 200 Green Bay..... Lost 1
3 5 0 0.375 143 238 San Francisco. Won 1
2 6 0 0.250 162 203 Detroit....... Won 1
2 6 0 0.250 102 173 Tampa Bay..... Lost 2
1 7 0 0.125 134 196 Arizona....... Lost 7
Six teams are going to the playoffs for the NFC. Chicago, New Orleans, and The Giants are in full command of their divisions. Seattle has the best record in theirs, but they haven’t exactly been lighting it up. Since the Giants are in firm control, it looks like the only chance the Cowboys have is a wildcard birth.
Who is in the wildcard hunt? Really pretty much every team in the NFC not listed above save Detroit, Tampa Bay, and Arizona. Unlike the AFC where a 4-4 record is looking like its too late, in the NFC it puts you in your own driver’s seat. Even the teams at 3-5 still have a chance. Pretty amazing really.
What looks good for Dallas? First and for most, our schedule. Of the remaining 8 games on the schedule, 5 will be at home. That is huge, especially in the new “parity” NFL. Home field advantage really means something. Of the 9 NFC teams in the NFC “Wildcard Hunt” only 1 has a loosing record at home. Another thing is, unlike years past, we are actually putting points on the board. This team can score, which means we are never really out of a game. On the defensive side, we are giving up an average of 20 points a game, but in comparison to the rest of the “Wildcard Hunt NFC” only Minnesota’s defense is allowing significantly less, and they have the same problem we used to have (think offense). Our point differential looks good. Also, take a look at some of the streaks for those teams around us. Quite a few of them got off to good starts, but are now loosing.
But really why do I feel better now? I remember telling my wife before the Giant's game when they were talking about the possibility of Romo comming in that "I would rather see us loose with Romo, than continue to play Bledsoe". Personally I didn't think Bledsoe would win us many games anyway, and at least we could see what we had in Romo. He is playing surprisingly well, and if he keeps it up, then we can win any given Sunday no matter the opponent. Can you imagine if the Cowboys have finally answered their QB question? Not only does it give me hope for this year, but for years to come.
Anyway, there is still hope.
