Richards took a step back this camp and was outplayed by Nate Thomas and Ajani Cornelius.

I guess the glass half-full view of it is, surprised at the rise of Thomas and Cornelius here. But yeah, Richards was underwhelming after looking like a legitimate challenger at left tackle his first two years.

That is true. I would have cut Adeniji and kept Richards, but we couldn't get any value out of the vet. At least we got something for a player who no longer appeared to be in our plans.

It's more about the pick swap. If the Saints had given us a sixth straight up, I'd consider it a good trade. We got two years out of him and then would have gotten a slightly lower pick back. As is, we did not increase our number of picks with this trade.

I think Cornelius is the ninth lineman (Guyton, Smith, Beebe, Booker, Steele, Thomas, Bass, Hoffman and Cornelius) and we were deciding whether to keep Richards or Adeniji as a 10th. We got something for Richards, so he goes. Of course, maybe we only keep nine OL.
