Building an NFL roster isn’t simply about finding and retaining talent. It’s also about knowing when to let go, knowing when to roll the dice and knowing where to find the most affordable labor force. For a team like the Cowboys, managing all three of these areas is critical to the wellbeing of the salary cap.

Though the cap is highly malleable, and the Cowboys aren’t remotely close to maximizing their purchasing power under it, it is in fact a real entity that should be responsibly managed. Owners of what will likely be four contracts each averaging $19+ million in 2025, the cost-conscience Cowboys will be interested in cutting costs at all possible corners to keep payroll low and their wallets fat.

One area where the Cowboys front office particularly excels in is populating their roster with players on rookie contracts. Under the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), players entering the NFL are capped on what they can receive in compensation from a team. Players often provide services well above their compensation levels, giving teams extraordinary bang for the buck throughout the length of their rookie deals.

The Dallas Cowboys are masters in finding steals through nontraditional avenues. From Brandin Aubrey and KaVontae Turpin who were found in other professional leagues, to Dak Prescott and DaRon Bland who were found in the latter portions of the draft, to Tony Romo and Miles Austin who were signed as undrafted free agents, the Cowboys have a knack for finding treasure in the rarest of places.

When Dallas signed undrafted tight end Brevyn Spann-Ford following the draft last spring, they were hoping they found their next big treasure. Standing almost 6-foot-7, 270-pounds, “big” might be an understatement.

https://cowboyswire.usatoday.com/2024/12/04/brevyn-spann-ford-cowboys-plans/

A blocking specialist by nature, Spann-Ford is already the Cowboys’ top-rated blocker at the TE position. Blessed with the size of a left tackle, Spann-Ford has the potential to develop into an elite blocker one day, possibly giving the Cowboys a mismatch player to design plays around.

Red Zone/short yardage specialist - Tight End unit strength.

My Granddaughter could GM better than Jerry.

At least she would take the job seriously and put some time into it.
Well Pops, buy the team for her ... as if you have cash flow as well as managed talent.

Loosing key defenders of the defensive box, 3 starters, and the starting corner backs don't mean a thing. Hunt for gold without standards also. Hero?

“The Cowboys are 22nd in the snap weighted age (SWA) this season, meaning they are one of the older teams in the league based on contributions. What having the third most snaps on rookie contracts means is old players are skewing the numbers a bit on SWA and when those outliers fall off (possibly DeMarcus Lawrence, Zack Martin, Eric Kendricks and Brandin Cooks), the Cowboys will swing strongly to other side of the SWA spectrum.”

This appears to indicate that the Cowboys have a bunch of rookie contract players that aren’t producing yet the article seems to be trying to frame it positively.

The Cowboys have been very good on draft day, there is no denying that. Where they really fall flat is their terrible knack for hanging on to and paying players well above their value when the better move is to trade or just let them walk.

The Dollar Store of NFL franchises. Yay.

USAA, roomie, really? Tape a salt tablet on boo boos.

There are a number of contributors that are actually of value and contributors of value. That does provide a credible source when it does.

Two of the teams fastest receivers didn't arrive via drafting. That is 2 of the 3 fastest and productive when drafted Lamb is included.

That made a strong receiver group.

Spann-Ford was non-drafted and fits nicely with Jake Ferguson and Luke Schoonmaker.......for sure, damned 'ol Jerry.

He's not wrong. They are amateurish when it comes to team building. I'm not saying they are amateurs, but you have to ask yourself, if they were, what would they do differently?

Hmmm Hero.. I might go get a sub.

You think Jerry is a good GM?

He has to make time for hosting boxing matches.

He has to make time for organizing Concerts.

He has to make time to swan around on his yacht.

He has to make time for his extra-marital affairs.

He has to make time for doing media spots.

He has to make time as the owner of the DCs.

He has to make time for his other businesses.

He has to make time to smash a bottle of JW blue.

When the hell does he has time to be a GM?

Your OP is right.. he is only interested in sitting on his fat wallet.

How fast do you become popular cutting Pro Bowlers. Oh, and the Cowboys have cut many such players before their careers ended.

No, this is about crying not earning the right to go to the Super Bowl...not about ability to build a good team today.

3 straight 12 win seasons stand on it's own merits.

This season lost 3 starting defensive ends for much of the play as well as their strongest two cornerbacks for most as well. This might affect box area and secondary.

Naw, excuses for you to cry about. Zeke was drafted and was managed when let go. Did he produce at a strong professional level as a player.

Austin and tears? Was he recognized as talent in the NFL?

Sounds like talent and the ability to micromanage successfully.

There are successful management teams.
It has a successful use of the stadium, world level class.
And a NFL team considered on a world class level as well.

I'm not feeling sorry for those not giving credit for a full view of the truth also.

Best is challenged annually. Crying about the Lakers?

Loosing key defenders of the defensive box, 3 starters, and the starting corner backs don't mean a thing. Hunt for gold without standards also.

The entire box and starters (4) were injured much of the season.
Add the two starting Cornerbacks in the secondary, yea, that might matter instead of crying.

So now we DIDN'T stink before "losing" players to injury? This is what Jerry is banking on people forgetting when we do nothing next offseason. Actually, it doesn't matter if they forget or not. Jerry gonna Jerry.

This season already is fully accountable, fan tears now or not. Still plenty of talent - fact.
