If Tony Romo makes it back for the last 2 or 3 games he would need 550 yards passing to move past Don Meredith for 4th on the all time Cowboys list.

Jason Witten needs 17 receptions to eclipse 600 for his career.

DeMarcus Ware needs 3.5 sacks to move past Greg Ellis into 2nd all time in Cowboys History.

The Cowboys all time record is 470-347-6 (33-25 in the post season). This puts their overall win % at .575, and regular season win % at .582. These %s are tied with the Miami Dolphins for both %'s. Miami is 411-304-4 overall (20-20 in the post season).

In other words, we need to win one more game than Miami to own both NFL records.

Good stuff. I hope Tony plays. And I think both Witten and Ware will get there. Down with the Dolphins!

You don't win games you tie. Have to include ties in the equation for win percentage. If you do, Miami is slightly ahead of us.

I want at least 3 wins in the final 5 games. Our only 5-11 seasons are the 3 Campo years. I'd rather have nothing remind me of those debacles.

I didn't count ties as wins.

Do sack numbers go back to 1960 for the Cowboys?

Thanks, Kent

Hmm.. well im not sure how you did the work then.

It would be number of wins divided by number of games played right?

So 470 divided by 823 would equal .571 for Dallas.

And 411 divided by 719 would equal .572 for Miami.

No, sacks were not an official stat until 1982.

Deacon Jones coined the term "sack" and he didn't start playing until 1961. Then in 1963 the NFL began to track the number of times QB got sacked, but not Defensive player sacks.

So Bob Lilly, Randy White, Harvey Martin, and Ed Jones all probably have more true sacks than Jim Jeffcoat's team record of 94.5, but since the stat was not tracked it is not recognized.

Sad. I think the NFL should go back and retroactively track the records.

This is wayyy more disappioingting than the Campo years. I didn't expect much from those teams as least.

ya id rather go 4-12 or hopefully 6-10 or better, 5-11 makes me wanna puke thinking back to the early days of the last decade

Thanks.

When I read the comment in the OP, I was like "***?"

Poor Jeffcoat sill doesn't get any love. Lol.

Yes, he does. No idea why I said Tolbert. I also slighted him a half sack. He has 94.5. I rushed my answer I guess.

The "unofficial" sack records for the Cowboys are as follows:

Harvey Martin - 114.0
Randy White - 111.1
Ed Too Tall Jones - 106.0
George Andrie - 97.0
Jethro Pugh - 95.5
Bob Lilly - 94.5
Jim Jeffcoat - 94.5
Greg Ellis - 77.0
Demarcus Ware - 74.0
Tony Tolbert - 59.0

Those are "unofficial" because the NFL didn't start tracking stats "officially" until 1982 but the Cowboys did from the early 60s on. Landry kept track of EVERYTHING back then.

For Bob Lilly and George Andrie, their actual totals are probably higher but there is no record of how many sacks either of them had before the team started keeping track (not sure when that was either but I'm guessing 1963 or 64). Also, very little video records remain from those early days.

For Martin, White, & Jones, their totals are probably pretty accurate since there is plenty of video to verify their sacks prior to 1982.

Sacks in the NFL are like blocked shots in the NBA. It cracks me up to see Olajuwon, Mutombo, & Kareem listed as the top-3 when in reality Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain blocked shots like crazy when they played but it was before the league started keeping track of them. I watched both Russell & Wilt play and they averaged about 10 blocks a game.

It would be really nice of Jerry Jones to have someone go through all of the old records that the Boys kept and put them together in a team record book. I'd be willing to help on that project. :D I'm sure Hos and a few others here would as well.

Oh I would jump all over that chance.

You and me both brother! I drool just thinking about getting my hands on those documents. :eek:hboy:

Very cool. This team really does have some great players regardless of out record.

Apparently, they get REALLY specific when giving credit for sacks. Were 9 others given credit for the same sack (which would be awesome) or did Manster just blow on the QB while Martin did the hard work?

;)

I must have gotten carried away with hitting the "1" key. :D

Should be 111.0
