Cowboys are a work-in-progress, but here’s why they are making strides

We are already a quarter of the way through the 2018 season (man, where does the time go?) and the Dallas Cowboys currently sit with a record of 2-2. Things have started a bit sluggish for this team as the offense hadn’t scored more than 20 points in a game until Sunday’s performance against the Detroit Lions. Fans were starting to get a bit worried, but a 400+ yards performance led by star running back Ezekiel Elliott made sure the team would have enough offense to pull out the win. Despite a strong showing last game, the state of this Cowboys offense is still a little uncertain as to what to expect going forward.

On the other side of the ball, things started out fantastic. It was like the defense was picking up where they left of last year. Dallas won four of their final five games last year and a lot of that had to do with the great performance of their defense. The Cowboys defense held opposing offenses to less than 300 yards in all but one of those games, with the only exception being when the New York Giants put up 330 yards when they were trying to play catchup during their 30-10 loss to Dallas win Week 14. The Cowboys started 2018 strong with three-straight under 300 yard performances. But just as the offense showed up last Sunday, the defense let up. Matthew Stafford and the Lions churned out 382 yards against the Cowboys and a lot of that came from big plays.

Dallas has been a work in progress since Garrett took over as coach, which means we've been going nowhere because by the time we build up one area, we've gotten weaker in another. This league just isn't built for long-term plans. Few teams can sustain success because players come and go.

Yep .. I’d start with a QB who’d instantly elevate our weaknesses at WR and TE.

Place a Goff or Mahomes here and we are much closer to a serious contender.

Our defense currently isn’t strong enough to carry a bottom feeder offense and QB.

We haven’t been out of the NFC div-round since the last SB win (Jan 1996) and some people continue to put “Cowboys” and “Super Bowl” in the same sentence.

Even with a first-round playoff bye, you still have to win TWO progressively more difficult games; usually against teams with better offenses and defenses than most of those you faced in the regular season.

Internet Nostradamuses, such as the BTB “experts”, might better serve their readers by first focusing on and explaining how we’re gonna get the two wins which must come BEFORE any Super Bowl appearance.

The Cowboys this era are a poster child for mediocrity. If not for our Super Bowl history we wouldn’t be thought of in the same sentence.

Maybe it will take another 10-20 years to sink in for this generation of fans? 20-25 years hasn’t been long enough.

We still have 2 generations of fans who identify this franchise with our gloried past.
