The only player on our offense who wasn't homegrown was Brian Waters (who ironically did start his career here).

The only other exception is Orton and Smith who are backups. *forgot about Bernadeau

Our defense is a bit different (mostly out of necessity due to injuries). If we had been healthy on the defensive line, it would have been entirely homegrown. 2/3rds of our starting lb corps is homegrown. 4/5ths of our secondary is homegrown. Brandon Carr is actually the only member of our secondary who was brought in.

Essentially our entire defensive line is based in makeshift free agency, but I doubt that will be the case moving forward.

I'm really excited for our draft next year even though we're long ways away. I can't help but think it will be focused on the offensive and defensive lines, especially the defensive line.

I am encouraged by good drafts of late and especially, since we will be drafting #32 this year, we have experience getting a starter with a very late 1st rounder...but, I don't want to think about that just yet...

Homegrown is good.

Guys like Selvie are similar to homegrown in that they were not expensive Free Agents.

This is good, but it's also somewhat unavoidable.

When you're constantly manipulating the cap to get under it, you kinda don't have a shot a the big name free agents often. Carr is it.

We signed Anthony Spencer to a 10 million dollar deal this year.
We also resigned Tony Romo to a 108 million dollar contract.

We aren't out signing free agents because we're paying the players we have.

Spencer was a cheaper option than a long-term deal to a free agent.

And I don't count paying a quarterback. That's a given if you have a good one.

There's a reason we've had to run the Livings, Bernadeaus, Allens, Cooks, Sims, etc, through here.

Thankfully, Garrett has drafted well.

Most teams that have success are homegrown. Giants didn't make any big time free agent signings their Super Bowl Run. Neither did the Packers or Steelers.

Free agency Super Bowls are won in the offseason but they don't amount to anything. If anything, the lack of salary cap space probably benefits us more than having salary cap being we can find hungry players who have to play well in order to keep their job as opposed to someone who is comfortable and taking plays off.

Great point. We just signed Sean Lee and Tyron, Carter and Dez are next IMO.

Plus, Carr was a highly unusual free agent: really good and really young (last year was his age-26 season). Guys like that don't come available very often. It's really rare when you sign a big-name free agent and make your team younger in the process.
