Cowboys at Giants: Aikman Efficiency Ratings

This team should not be 4-3 according to the stats. Which is why stats can’t and will never be able to tell the whole story.

Now if there were stats for “finding ways to lose”, “playing down to your opponent”, “starting a game flat and unprepared” etc... we may be closer to understanding why this team is 4-3 and why no team on the schedule should be overlooked and why there is no team in the NFL that this team can’t beat if they play to their potential.

The portion of your post in bold. No team should be overlooked. And, if we play to our potential, no team in the NFL can beat us.

I was adamant about that before the Jets game. After the game that is why I called it an aberration. Because the more efficient team should never play down to, and lose to an opponent like the Cowboys did against the Jets.

But, it happens to all teams unfortunately. It almost happened with the 49ers in their game against the Cardinals.

With that being said, Aikman is accurate with these ratings. It's not like some mere power poll with opinions. Aikman has a fact based system that takes every important factor into account.

My issue is not with Aikman’s ratings... but more with the identity issues that have plagued this team under Garrett.

Doesn’t matter if it’s Romo or Dak under center— this team has a troubling habit of believing their own hype, talking a big game, showing up flat and unprepared, losing games in historically tragic fashion, playing down to opponents, and crapping the bed against teams that are playoff caliber.

All of the above points to one thing: Leadership Issues with FO and coaching staff

I think the reason the Cowboys lost to the Jets was obvious from rewatching the game. The Jets wanted it more, especially in the first half. They came out more fired up and determined than the Cowboys, who looked flat and uninspired. The Cowboys probably saw this game like the Miami game. Miami played them tough early but then the Cowboys pulled away in the 2nd half. But the Jets got too big of a lead early. You could see the momentum in the game begin to change until Garrett when for it on 4th and 2 from the Jets 6 yard line with the score 7-3. When that play failed the Jets regained the momentum in a big way and hit that 92 yard bomb on the next play.

The Cowboys played a lot harder and faster against the Eagle, a much better team than the Jets, and they blew the Eagles out. If the Cowboys can give that kind of effort, they can beat anyone. But as others have said, they tend to play down to the level of the teams they are playing - and they are stymied by their coaching staff.

Agreed. Shooting yourself in the foot off sets stats. The Cowboys own mistakes are more responsible for their record not being as good as it should be than them getting outplayed.

Right ... and that's not just turnovers. Untimely penalties, whether fair or unfair. Missed field goals when they are absolutely needed. Bad play-calls that either stall a drive or take points off the board.

Great post Hawkeye.

This team, especially in the social media age we now live in, gets so caught up in themselves and succumb to the hype machine that is generated after every playoff season. This would never happen under Belichick or Johnson. Coaches like that keep everyone on their toes and walking on eggshells. Being a Dallas Cowboy player requires constant grounding. And your spot on here. The FO fosters this culture.

I concur with everything posted so far.
"Hey, the Jets were NOT an aberration! We've see this before in Garrett's tenure! C'mon man!!"
Oops. Except for that. Thanks Mr. Echo. :D

I absolutely understand where you are coming from. And I have always understood the frustration of fans when a team loses to an inferior opponent. But it does happen to all teams.

Regarding playing down to opponents:

-Since Belichick was mentioned somewhere in this thread. I quickly checked out a few seasons of the Patriots starting in 2010.

-The Belichick led Patriots have lost to vastly inferior teams every single year. Except for one (2014)

Patriots/Belichick rundown of losing to vastly inferior teams since 2010:

2010: Browns L
2011: Bills L
2012: Dolphins L
2013: Bengals L
2014: N/A
2015: Eagles/Dolphins L, L
2016: Bills L
2017: Dolphins L
2018: Jags, Lions, Dolphins L, L, L

One could say that Belichick and the Patriots play down to their opponents.

I dunno. Is it coaching and lack of leadership? Or are the players in the NFL responsible for not "showing up" at times? Contrary to popular belief, this isn't just a Dallas Cowboys type thing.

Not that it would happen. But, if players only got their $$$ only for games they win. Then every week would look like the playoffs!

Need an efficiency score for coaching?

IMO, the bottom line with the Cowboys underachieving record is the coaching staff not getting the most out of their players. The front office has put plenty of talent on the roster, they are just not consistent. I also do not believe, overall, the position coaches are very good, it's not just the upper level coaches we all speak about.

Belichik has earned the benefit the doubt after 6 trophies... Garrett? 10 years and counting. Big, big, big, big, BIG difference in cultures right now between those two teams.

It’s big.

Maybe try In English next time.

You know, I agree in part to this. Especially this year. Not so much that the position coaches aren't any good. But are they on the same page? I don't know.

The QB and receivers have to be on the same page. As does every member of the team. But are the coaches on the same page?

Just one example. The Saints game this year. The Saints are up by two points. The Dallas Cowboys just need a FG to win the game. We were out of timeouts but had just under 2 minutes on the clock.

No plays that I recall were called to the sideline to step out and stop the clock. They were all down the middle of the field.

That has been fixed since that game, but I couldn't believe it when I saw what we were doing. We probably would have gotten the W in the Saints game if we had done so.

I do wonder if the coaches were on different pages in the last 2 minutes of that game.
