Cowboys betting on quick growth for pass rush in 2016
Cowboys betting on quick growth for pass rush in 2016

With two of their best pass rushers suspended, the Dallas Cowboys are hoping the younger players on their current roster develop quickly in order to fill the team’s pass rush void.

Earlier this offseason, the Dallas Cowboys found out they would start the upcoming regular season without the services of two of their best pass rushers in DeMarcus Lawrence and Randy Gregory. Both young defensive ends received four-game suspensions for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy.
Last week, the news got worse when it was revealed Gregory failed yet another drug test and could receive an even bigger suspension from the league.

Yet, the Cowboys have done little to address their scheduled voids. Instead, it appears Dallas is content to roll with the players that are already on the roster. Young players, whom the Cowboys are hoping defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli can turn into pass rushing monsters in 2016.

“I think we have healthy competition at the defensive line. I think that will bring out the best out in the guys,” Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett told the Dallas Morning News. “They go against really good offensive linemen every day so we will develop and grow. The culture will be right, the environment will be right for them to do that…my experience has been if they’re in the right environment, they’re the right kind of guy and they have some talent they will grow and they will grow quickly. We’re going to give them the chance to do that.”

At the head of that young rushmen group are likely three names. Defensive ends Benson Mayowa, David Irving and Ryan Russell. All three have been praised for their play throughout OTA’s and minicamp. And it seems they have been the top reappearing names associated with replacing Lawrence and Gregory in the blogosphere as well.

Rookie Charles Tapper, veteran Jack Crawford and unknowns like Mike McAdoo are all likely to see a lot of snaps during training camp in the following weeks. That will be how the Cowboys will determine who will actually start at defensive end in Dallas to kick off the regular season in September. Their growth will be crucial to the success of the Cowboys defense this year.

If you are a young, unproven defensive end in the NFL, there is likely no better place to earn your shot in the NFL than with the Dallas Cowboys in 2016. They clearly have plans to only promote from within for now. But as the old saying goes: The best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry.

There seems to be many articles/blogs about the Cowboys inadequate pass rush. I guess a lot of people see the same thing and are concerned. Like the articles says, if you are young and unproven the Cowboys is the place for you.

Not a smart bet when romo has 3 years left. Basically risking wasting a year.

I agree, but this is the problem when one player's fate defines a team. No one is THAT important, not even the QB. We better find his replacement asap...and then find a really good backup as well. I would have competition each and every day at that position. But that's easier said than done...mind you a billionaire could surely find a solution.

Can't wait until the pads come on adter these first few walk through type practices. Then the blue white scrimmage game on the 7th. so we can get some reports on the DL's progress.

Remember though, these young players are going against the best OL in the game. So they can learn a lot from that.

There is a chance the Cowboys are playing this right. But the odds are significantly against the Cowboys finding a good pass rush with the top 4 DEs they will trot out opening game.

Marinelli is likely going to find himself having to blitz a lot more than he would want to.

I always thought he should blitz more even if he had a pass rush.
But yes, he will need to be more creative in his defensive game plans and schemes.

The Cowboys franchise learned the lesson on intense player evaluations and matching to scheme preferences of the coaching staffs that are molding technique and interactions,

Even with a yearly accountability for on the field success, the team has gone through three years of adjustments now, with Rod Marinelli directing how to approach the applications and player developments. This next season, one should expect that the whole group should be top shelf and functional. There is still some transition to this year's group...but that is planned as well.

Gregory and Lawrence are the biggest backslide to this unit. If Rolando McClain had just been a man, and either fully committed or allowed the Cowboys to have gone a different direction when there were still a plate full of options, things would be much stronger, yet.

Lawrence should be back after four games, and his contributions not all lost. Gregory has to either become solid in his own and personal life, or defensive end again tops the list for next off season.

This doesn't mean that the work by Leon Lett and Charles Haley, with the tackles and ends, is going on deaf ears right now. It isn't. This group should continue to develop and cover for the questions provided by the status of Gregory. Mayowa, Irving, and Tapper should provide a reliable rotation...and upgrade as soon as Lawrence returns. Then the role for Gregory will come more to light.

The make up of the current defense, is on getting pressure from four players the majority of time...but that is already in the works.
