Cowboys betting on quick growth for pass rush in 2016
Cowboys betting on quick growth for pass rush in 2016
With two of their best pass rushers suspended, the Dallas Cowboys are hoping the younger players on their current roster develop quickly in order to fill the team’s pass rush void.
Earlier this offseason, the Dallas Cowboys found out they would start the upcoming regular season without the services of two of their best pass rushers in DeMarcus Lawrence and Randy Gregory. Both young defensive ends received four-game suspensions for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy.
Last week, the news got worse when it was revealed Gregory failed yet another drug test and could receive an even bigger suspension from the league.
Yet, the Cowboys have done little to address their scheduled voids. Instead, it appears Dallas is content to roll with the players that are already on the roster. Young players, whom the Cowboys are hoping defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli can turn into pass rushing monsters in 2016.
“I think we have healthy competition at the defensive line. I think that will bring out the best out in the guys,” Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett told the Dallas Morning News. “They go against really good offensive linemen every day so we will develop and grow. The culture will be right, the environment will be right for them to do that…my experience has been if they’re in the right environment, they’re the right kind of guy and they have some talent they will grow and they will grow quickly. We’re going to give them the chance to do that.”
At the head of that young rushmen group are likely three names. Defensive ends Benson Mayowa, David Irving and Ryan Russell. All three have been praised for their play throughout OTA’s and minicamp. And it seems they have been the top reappearing names associated with replacing Lawrence and Gregory in the blogosphere as well.
Rookie Charles Tapper, veteran Jack Crawford and unknowns like Mike McAdoo are all likely to see a lot of snaps during training camp in the following weeks. That will be how the Cowboys will determine who will actually start at defensive end in Dallas to kick off the regular season in September. Their growth will be crucial to the success of the Cowboys defense this year.
If you are a young, unproven defensive end in the NFL, there is likely no better place to earn your shot in the NFL than with the Dallas Cowboys in 2016. They clearly have plans to only promote from within for now. But as the old saying goes: The best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry.
