Cowboys Camp Report, August 7: Teach Slowly, Hit Hard
Posted by Rafael at Wednesday, August 07, 2013

Bill Parcells always used the first pre-season game as a pretext for ripping on his team the following week. He would give his Cowboys teams the most vanilla of game plans, limiting their chances of success. This way, there were always mistakes to identify and iron out. Complacency was discouraged.

6:15: First play of 11-on-11, Rod Marinelli interrupts the session to chew out starters who did not make the proper adjustment to the offense's movement. Marinelli is speaking to the linebackers, who are responsible for the call. His tone is, peppery, shall we say.

6:35 -- 11-on-11 just concluded. Drill run half-speed with helmets off. That didn't stop Rod Marinelli, who continues to jump into this front seven between nearly every play. He's not yelling, but he's pulling nearly every player to his face and giving them detailed attention. It will be interesting to see how this translates once the 11-on-11 with hitting starts.

My favorite coach on the staff.

-- Bernardeau watch: for those keeping track, Mackenzy Bernadeau "looked great" in the 11-on-11 helmet-free portion of the practice. We'll update you on him when the hitting starts.

Hooray.

So could someone exp[lain to me why suddenly Garrett and Marinelli using fiery speech and getting in people's faces has become popular, but when some fans here suggested Romo and Ware need to adopt that type of style of leadership, it was poo-poo'd and unecesasary?

This game is played with intimidation. It's led with intimidation.

I think this is what has been needed for a number of years.

Honestly, I still don't care for this stuff much, one way or another. But I think it's pretty clear that they're making a conscious effort to crack down this week after a good game this weekend to keep players' attention.

I'm skeptical about how much it helps, but I don't see how it really hurts. Personally, I like cutting bottom-roster players who don't perform to make the point that nobody better ever be comfortable. But, maybe this is a sign of Garrett getting more comfortable and nuanced in the way he handles motivating the players on the roster.

The usual suspects are already pooh pooing this but the reality is that while football requires precision and execution, emotion and intimidation play a vital role both for players and for coaches

Can someone please tell me why people don't understand that there are multiple leadership styles? Or that there is a difference between a player and a coach? This kind of posts are especially ironic coming from Cowboys fans since they should know that the "fiery" type of coaching the only type that can be effective (*cough cough* Landry *cough cough*). But hey, continue to criticize those with an understanding of the history of the game.

I like it, we've been needing some fire from either players or coaches for some time now. I agree with you about the people that dont think that it matters.

Garrett and Marinelli are coaches. Romo is obviously a player. I'm not necessarily against it but the other side of that coin is that players have to respect/fear the guy who is grabbing your face mask enough to prevent said player from pummeling them.

Is Romo that guy? Be a tough lesson to learn, for everybody if he weren't.

Fiery personalities are not without there records of success either. It only plays for so long but it can be effective in the short term (*cough cough* Jimmy Johnson *cough cough*).

There is more then just the one way to skin the proverbial cat, as you pointed out.

You need to review Landry a little. He was the quintessential intimidation coach. There are different ways to intimidate, which is perhaps what you mean5t.

But the Wade Phillips, "I'm your best friend," Dave Campo, " Use the time clock when you get to work," Barry Switzer, "Let's share a hotdog," styles were lacking.

And let's not forget Aikman and Irvin and Haley and others that were pretty excitable.

I'm just not certain why anyone would be resistant to this style since what we've seen for over a decade outside of Parcells was milque toast.
