HUNTINGTON -- Bobby Carpenter has viewed Marshall University football's evolution under fourth-season head coach Mark Snyder, occasionally attending practice both during spring and August preseason camp.

He returned to Edwards Stadium last week, visiting his former Ohio State position coach (Snyder) and younger brother George Carpenter, a Thundering Herd freshman linebacker.

The elder Carpenter, a third-year Dallas Cowboys linebacker, appreciated Friday's defense-dominated practice.

"There was a lot of intensity out here," Bobby said. "The defense was running around, playing hard. We've got to get the offense going a little bit. But when one side of the ball is really competitive, the other side's going to step up to that challenge.

"I think the offense will step up and get things rolling here."

The offense did just that early in Sunday's scrimmage, ratcheting the pace and running effectively. Still, Marshall linebackers such as Kellen Harris and Phillip Gamble were productive. Corey Hart also has impressed with several linebackers sidelined because of injuries.

Defensive coordinator Rick Minter is mixing and matching 3-4 and 4-3 looks, maximizing the Herd's considerable linebacker speed. Carpenter, an outside linebacker in Dallas' 3-4 scheme, appreciates the Thundering Herd's defensive activity.

"They're playing good," Carpenter said. "They're fast. They're physical. Guys are running around and starting to understand the coverages. This is a complex scheme they've got in. It's extremely complex for college and they've done very well for only being in it for a couple of weeks."

George Carpenter, a 5-foot-10, 209-pound grayshirt who will be a true freshman this season, also is absorbing the new system. Big brother is there for instruction, and as a bonus, Bobby Carpenter can visit with a mentor/friend.

"Obviously I love being around football and helping the young guys," said Carpenter, who also took in Sunday's practice. "We've got some good young players here and I'm just happy to help him out and see what he can do."

Anthony Hanshew referred to him as an OLB in Dallas though. Was there another position change for Carp that I missed?

Maybe he was referring to his position with his new team running a 4-3 Defense, in which Carp would be cast a strongside OLB. :)

Obviously Not.

Well, if you are going to take it literally in the first place, then you really don't need to ask your first question. It was already answered in the article.
