News: Cowboys coach Leon Lett using his past to mentor Randy Gregory

Outlook for what....living a life without weed.......its not like this kid is a 10-15yr sack player, what he did at NEBRASKA is irrelevant.
What has he proven....he hasnt shown anything maybe flashed some potential. Its not like he is Lawrence Taylor this kid a nothing but a distraction.....at this point he has more failed drug test then sacks.......Time to move on.....You cant fix stupid.... Fans need to stop propping up idiot players that choose drugs over a once in a life time opportunities...
How many people, get the opportunity he has....and fans want to give him a second chance....send his *** home.....No more Quincy Carters

Oh, for sure, toss out a non responsible label and move on...hey, disposable people when the mood strikes.

Yea, the Cowboys should have just moved on from Michael Irvin and Erik Williams, the nerve of those monsters.

You guys really don't think the presence of both Leon Lett and Charles Haley won't be making serious adjustments in the kid's outlook?

They have done such a wonderful job with it already. I mean, it took the whole year for him to get caught and kicked out of the league. Exceptional job Dallas. Well done!

IRVING, Texas - The NFL once banned Leon Lett for a year from the game he loved.

It’s one of the best things that ever happened to the Dallas Cowboys defensive tackles coach.

The suspension, which caused him to miss 16 games, including the first 13 of the 1997 season, proved to Lett that he had the mental toughness to survive the worst of mistakes while showing him that he didn't have to keep being his own worst enemy.

It forced him confront his insecurities and learn to embrace success. There was no need, he discovered, to fear success and sabotage himself, because he was worthy of the attention and adulation his prowess on the football field fueled.

That's why Lett, who earned a spot in the Pro Bowl in 1998, views second-year defensive end Randy Gregory differently than others in the organization.

Cowboys defensive end Randy Gregory will miss the first four games of the 2016 season after violating the NFL's substance-abuse policy.

"I trust him," Lett said. "I've been where he's been. I know what it takes to overcome it."

Lett talks to Gregory often about the mindset it takes to win on the field, and the preparation it takes off the field to position himself to succeed.

I don't. My dads an alcoholic and we are his family and can't make him change. Lett is merely a position coach to him

Thats was over 25 years ago...you write like it was just a few years ago.....plus Ervin and Williams didn't crash and burn on drugs their rookie year... Aldon Smith, Gregory, Josh Gordon all expect the league/teams support the behaviors and lies while getting paid Millions..... Dude straight up lied, and cried on National Tv.....just another Josh Brent....feel good story for the Jerry Jones and the Cowboys.....

Cowboys are turning into a rehab organization....instead of champions..

As of today we've heard nothing about further action against Gregory... Which I would think this means Gregory has not had an issue since his last positive test, which was a few months ago.

I think that's a positive sign.

Folks may ridicule the Garrett mantra's of "Make today better than yesterday" or "String together one good day, then another, than another" but that's what precisely needs to happen for Gregory. Putting together several weeks and then several months of no usage is very important.

I hope and pray that he figures it out, but I'm not going to hold my breath.

Hey Leon, a quick word of advice. You might want to help him BEFORE he gets suspended. Just saying.

I'm a believer in that unless the person themselves want to change they won't. That's just my opinion. I don't see Gregory as wanting to change enough to do it

Sure but the familiar, ie like your fam, are harder to change someone's mind. Not saying that there is anything wrong with you or what you have tried to do but sometimes it takes an objective outside voice to be believed and family right or wrong is not objective by definition.

I agree that their mind has to change first btw.

How do you know that?

No one has even heard Gregory comment on his situation since the suspension was announced and that's been about 3 months.

He failed right before the combine knowing a test was coming. He had to of failed several times last season, and he failed whenever the last drug test was. I'm sure he wants to change but I don't think he wants it bad enough. The proof is his suspension and being drafted in the second round

At some point if someone is going to get their life straightened out there does come a moment in time where yes they make that decision.

Neither you nor I know if he's reached that point presently.

Don't be stupid.
Blokes, those two should be kept away from youth. All youth!

I assume that there is quite an age difference between your Dad and Gregory. The use is different between the two.

I'm sorry that your Dad has the problem. That isn't fun.

But our experiences at home don't run throughout society as to how different people react. Gregory has youth to his advantage, but a stereotype just doesn't cover the specifics of this case...sorry, guy.

Twenty five years...like that changes the deal as to what's involved. C'mon, join the real world, upfront...

Like you have a front row seat on anything, but media hype. Oh, great source there...
