Cowboys coach shares what made Michael Irvin great

http://thelandryhat.com/2016/06/09/cowboys-coach-shares-what-made-michael-irvin-great/

In the midst of the Texas summer heat, Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett remembers what made former wide receiver Michael Irvin a Hall of Famer.
When going down the list of the greatest Dallas Cowboys players of all-time, it will not take you long to come across Michael Irvin‘s name. The Cowboys first round draft pick in 1988, Irvin went on to have a twelve-year career in Dallas, record 750 catches, nearly 12,000 receiving yards, 65 touchdowns, receive five Pro Bowl invitations, a Pro Bowl MVP award and three Super Bowl rings.
Forced to retire in 1999 due to a spinal cord injury, Irvin was finally inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame nine years later. One of the attributes that made the former heart and soul of those nineties championship teams so special was his legendary work ethic.

With the current version of the Cowboys now grinding out OTA sessions out in the grueling Texas heat, Irvin’s former teammate and current Dallas head coach Jason Garrett reminisced recently about his time with the Hall of Famer during their offseason practices at Valley Ranch.

I have often wondered just how much modern NFL players work, on their own these days. The current CBA has really limited what you can do in team events so it's even more important now to work on your own to learn your craft, so to speak. It almost lends itself to a lessor quality of play, if you will. With schemes becoming more and more sophisticated and players and coaches having less and less time to work together, it's just something that is becoming more and more important IMO. I hope our guys are doing this but I honestly have no idea how many really believe in this?

Exactly being great does not just happen, you work your tail off as Irvin did that is why he become a HOF'er and a Super Bowl champion. Luck has nothing to do with it.

Yep - as they say. "Luck is a residue of design."

I agree. Pats are not the luckiest team they are well disciplined and do not beat themselves. I don't think their overall talent is that great, like most of the top teams they have key players but even roll players are precise in their execution?

Irvin was maniacal in how he worked on his game. Consistently. Every former teammate and coach tell the stories of seeing Irvin practicing like a madman all hours of the day. Now that's leadership. You can talk about the cocaine, whatever off-field situations he endured, but players will follow a talented player who consistently practices through near physical exhaustion to get better at his craft.

I think Irvin let the success go to his head. It is easy to do in Dallas when the Cowboys are producing championship and players are being treated like gods. I fully agree with you and have witnessed 1st hand of how hard Irvin worked. I attended camp every year when they were in Austin at St. Edwards and Irvin not only worked hard he pushed others. It would be in the 100's at camp and late in the day Irvin would be hollering and pushing guys saying this is the 4th qrt come on.
