BARRY THROWN FOR A LOSS
PRESEASON FOOTBALL OUTRATES HISTORIC BONDS HR
By DON KAPLAN

August 11, 2007 -- CALL it Barry Bonds fatigue.

The ratings for Thursday night's meaningless pre-season NFL game on Fox sacked the paltry audience who tuned in for Barry Bonds' historic home run Tuesday on ESPN2.

About 7.5 million viewers saw the Indianapolis Colts battle the Dallas Cowboys on Fox Thursday - compared to 1.3 million viewers who watched Bonds slam his record-breaking 756th home run just before midnight Tuesday, according to Nielsen.

While it's fair to point out that the Bonds game aired on ESPN2 late at night from San Francisco - on cable - it's also fair to point out that the Colts-Cowboys game didn't even feature any of the teams' stars for very long, since most of the game's starters were pulled after just a few plays.

The Bonds home run, meanwhile, had been expected for weeks - and, under normal circumstances, probably would have sparked a great deal more interest if Bonds wasn't dogged by allegations of steroid abuse.

Baseball is losing fans and has been for years. What do they expect with a 120+ game season. Performance enhancers stealing records form class acts. They let steroids run rampant to try and keep us "entertained" with puffed up home run hitters. They need to fix this sport.

You know I use to be a huge baseball fan... absolutely huge. Bought the "Bill James Historical Abstract" every year. Played APBA Baseball. I looked forward to every Yankee game on TV but would even lower myself to watch the Mets.

But now I could care less. And it wasn't the strikes or the escalating salaries. It was the "cheating" due to steroids and how they turned the game into a grotesque homer-fest where the numbers aren't real.

I thought the game was terrific from about the late 70's to the mid 80's. There was a wonderful mix of power and speed. Guys would lead the league in home-runs with totals in the 40's but we still had teams stealing 150 bases a year (or more).

And now I can't even force myself to watch a game on TV.

McGuire, Bonds, Sosa, Palmero (and others). I never want to see them in the Hall Of Fame.

Yeah buddy :yourock:

Ichiro is amazing. Of course I'm a biased Ms fan, but that guy could be hanging with the best HR hitters, but he's so good at what he does now that he doesn't have to.

One of these days he's going to enter a HR derby and shock everybody.

im a Read sox fan and IMO the problem in baseball isnt the steroids as much as it is the fact that you essentially only see 6 or so teams that ever have a chance of taking it all. OTOH you have about half the league that has zero chance. Temas like the Pirates, Devil Rays, KC, etc have about zero chance to make it. Even the small market teams that have seen success like Oakland and Minny are always flawd and play complete temas that beat them in the playoffs.

Whereas you look at football and every single game is interestintg and even the cellar dwellar temas can come out of nowhere to win or get close to winning it all like Chi did last year.

thats what i love about the NFL, every game is interesting and every year there is really no telling what going to happen. Its downright sweet.

I think Jerry Jones deserves a lot of credit for this as he very easliy could have been the NFLs Steinbrenner and maintained his finanical advantage over other teams but he did what was best for everyone and now everyone has a shot.

You can say what you want about JJ as a GM but as an owner there are none better in the NFL.

Huh? In the last 7 years, 10 different teams have been in the World Series and we've had 7 different winners. Right now, with 80% of the season over, there are still 17 out of 30 teams with good chances at the postseason, and not a single division is decided.

Whereas you look at football and every single game is interestintg and even the cellar dwellar temas can come out of nowhere to win or get close to winning it all like Chi did last year.

That's parity, and people here are constantly complaining about it.

to be fair, they were 11-5 in 05. it's not like they came out of nowhere, they've had a sb caliber d, and a crappy-good o. depending on which grossman shows up.

Kind of hypocritical to extoll the virtues of football and in the same breath bash baseball for steroids. Players in both sports are on the stuff. I wish there were no such thing as steroids, personally...but c'est la vie.
