Cowboys considered two QBs in draft

While the Cowboys did not have any plans on drafting a quarterback after acquiring Milton, as two names slipped, they became more of a consideration for Dallas: Shedeur Sanders and Quinn Ewers.

Sanders is someone that Jerry Jones pounded the table for in Thursday night’s press conference to be drafted by a quarterback-needy team. While conversations did continue behind closed doors, there was an expectation that Dallas would have had to trade back into the fourth round to get him. That obviously never made it further than the concept phase, and Sanders was finally selected with the No. 144 selection by the Cleveland Browns, just five picks before the Cowboys went on the clock for the first time on day three.

Ewers was someone that Schottenheimer saw throw at Texas’ Pro Day back in 2024 for receivers Xavier Worthy and Adonai Mitchell, and he had kept his eye on the DFW-raised signal-caller. His name was another that got thrown around in the draft room on day three, but Dallas resorted to filling needs at other spots. Ewers was finally selected in the seventh round by the Miami Dolphins.

Cause you probably had arguments by a bunch of scouts for and against each QB and thats a great way to end a debate for next to nothing in only using a 5th round. Good chance someone gets fired after this season especially if Sanders out plays the other QB.

Hedge their bet. If the consensus was he was a 1st-2nd round talent and he dropped because he is so entitled then they felt comfortable with the risk. Chances are 1 of their 2 picks won't work out. And this might be the good thing is that sanders will have an actual competition and not be handed anything. If either of these guys becomes a good starter the Browns win.

False, he is WAY better than some of those QBs taken before him. If people don't see he was played by the league it's crazy. All because of how cocky he is

• How cocky he is
• How his cockiness reflects on his coach-ability (or lack thereof)
• How any action by the team he or his father disagree with could turn into a high visibility drama on social media and the talking heads
• How the head coach of the team (and the team itself) drafting him would be dealing with constant speculation of hiring Deion to replace him.
  How he's better than most other QB's in this draft, but not considered a blue chip.

That's why teams didn't draft him earlier.

The Browns sent a clear message that he is not going to walk in and be handed the team by already drafting a QB and waiting until the fifth. Who knows if he will get the message.

And that would have been ok. He would have been a 5th round QB. Majority of those don’t pan out. The potential outweighed the negative to me.

I doubt they had any interest in Ewers and Jerry was probably the only one who may have had the itch for Sanders in the 5th. The Browns got wind of that itch and jumped just ahead of Dallas to stop that.

May be a decent move for them if they can just weather the current PR storm and get him a couple plays on film. Let him play up his best behavior and maturation angle and then trade him next year for a higher pick.

It wouldn't shock me if you hear nothing but reports of him being such a great leader, first one in and the last to leave, type BS. Prime will pay for that coverage and there isn't a shortage of media members willing to partake.
