Cowboys counting on breakout season by third-year WR

Serious fantasy football players should be well aware that wide receivers tend to break out in their third season. The Cowboys are banking on that happening with Sam Hurd and/or Miles Austin.
Todd Archer will have much, much more on the young receivers in tomorrow's paper. Hurd and Austin, in particular, have an intriguing blend of experience, opportunity and hunger. Whether or not Terry Glenn is on the team, Hurd and Austin have the chance to seize significant roles and establish themselves as part of the Cowboys' core for years to come.
Judging by their actions this off-season, they're ready. And their words certainly back that up.
"Whether he's here or not, I'm relishing a bigger role," Hurd said.
"I have a lot of confidence in myself, so I feel like I can [provide a speed threat opposite T.O.]," said Austin, who has slimmed down 12 pounds since running a pre-draft 4.47 40. "But it's up to the coaches. I have to show them."
And he's done just that while wearing shorts.
.
You might be thinking that, as undrafted free agent, the third-year breakout theory doesn't apply to Austin and Hurd. Check out Rod Smith's career path for an example of a undrafted receiver from a small school emerging as a star in his third season.
Now, I'm not predicting that will happen for Austin or Hurd, especially with Jason Witten and Terrell Owens hogging the ball as Tony Romo's primary targets. But it wouldn't be surprising whatsoever if Hurd and/or Austin had a 500-yard, five-TD breakout season.

I'm actually feeling pretty good about these two guys. As the article says TO and Witten are Romo's primary targets regardless. If Hurd or Austin can step up even a little bit then our offense will be more than fine.

At this point I say no to an expensive #2 wide receiver ala CJ or Roy Williams. Give the young ones their shot.

It's so refreshing to see someone use "then" and "than" in the proper context.

As to your post, I'm also anxious to see what Hurd and Austin can do this year. However, if another potential #1 was to drop in our laps at a reasonable price I don't think we should pass up the opportunity.

Austin has the speed to do it- but he has to show the ability to catch when it matters and run the routes right.

Looking at the receiving corps, one certainly hopes for a major improvement from one of the backups, which means Austin or Hurd. But don't rule out Dallas adding someone else to the mix before camp which would impact the roster.

1 - T.O.
2 - P.Crayton
3 - S. Hurd
4 - M.Austin
5 - I.Stanbach
6 - M.Jefferson or D. Amendola

Cut - Glenn
Practice Squad - #6 above, Bradford or Polk

Despite the good play by Austin in the OTAs & minicamp, count me as wary until I see him consistently catching a variety of passes in our preseason opener. There have just been too many WRs in the last 10 years with the Cowboys who've had the size/speed but bad hands.

Wow... 12 lbs is some serious weight for a WR...

Very reasonable and very smart. I agree.

With that said... if Boldin or Roy become available - WE SHOULD MAKE A PLAY for one of them.

We have been hearing about potential for a while now. One thing to point out is that the 3 year rule and the examples given around the league is that most of the WR's from 2005 dicussed as breaking out were high draft choices.

It is a long shot to sit here and say these guys will be consistent. I hope I am dead wrong and they light it up, but I am doubting until I see it.
