Cowboys create more than 19m in cap space with three restructures

This is actually interesting. I personally can't see them doing these moves for no reason. It really makes me believe they are planning to add someone of significance. But who?
Maxx might be the most likely. But I'm not convinced, especially after the Miller addition. Gonzo? We can dream.
Who else would you consider trading for and what would you be willing to give up?

I was thinking the same thing. If they get Maxx, they think that they are very close and by adding him they could win it all this year.
Still not convinced, about a lot of things. That they are that close, that it's actually Maxx they are targeting, that they will actually do it. That it would work...
But this is making wonder for sure.
 
I can’t see Gonzalez happening as it would require us redoing his contract and essentially making him the highest paid CB. Not sure that would sit well with Pickens after refusing to extend him. To me Maxx makes more sense but I doubt there’s any deal in place but clearing cap space is smart as there may be another deal out there to be made and now we have that flexibility.
 

So some food for thought. I went to research and asked when was the last time the Cowboys restructured deals this close to the season and what did they do with it?

What we found:
This appears to be the first time the Cowboys have restructured multiple deals this close to the season since 2021, when Dak and Ezekiel Elliott's deals were both restructured to clear up a combined ~$12 million in cap space. Jerry at the time said essentially the same thing the team is telling me now it was cap space but always looking around the corner.

So what actually happened that year ?

No big moves for the Cowboys after that. No trade acquisitions. They ended up rolling over around $4 million in cap into 2022.

Now, the number they have freed up in flex is way larger than that, It looks like the Cowboys are now sitting at ~$33 million in cap space after clearing $19 million to go with their $14 million.

So let’s hypothetically talk about a player.

Raiders and Maxx say he is staying put but if they did move him the team acquiring Crosby would be taking on ~$30.7 million in cap charges from Crosby.

OverTheCap explains some options though:

“After the trade occurs the acquiring team then has the ability to restructure the contract to bring the salary cap charge down. In Crosby’s case they would convert $28.7 million to a bonus, likely adding a void year in the process, and save $22.96 million in cap room, bringing Crosbys salary cap number for the year down to $7.822 million. However, that does not occur until after the trade. You need the $29.857M to execute the trade not just $7.8 million.”

Fascinating stuff. I know nothing. I’ve asked questions.

Team sources tell me the money is cap space. We shall see.

Where does this Gonzalez stuff come from? Didn’t they pick up his 5 year option?

That really isn't true because before the move the cap space was in those outer years. After the move, if you don't spend it, it rolls over and is in those outer years and this continues each year. There is zero difference mathematically unless you spend it. You are confusing it with when teams backload contracts to keep the current year cap hit low and then can keep signing more players in the current year. We haven't YET done that...but we might...

  • So, the actual number is closer to $18m

If there’s a “big” move coming, I’m putting my money on Josh Sweat.
  • Arizona has no reason to keep bin becuse they are in tank mode.
  • He publicly said he doesn’t want to be there.
  • He fits a serious need
  • He played for Parker in Philly
  • Arizona has already paid out like $7m of his 2026 cap hit
  • The incoming cap would be around $10m
  • We can absorb him easily and still keep $8-10m for trade deadline deals or rollover to offset s small portion of the piper that has to be paid next off season
By the way, take note of the local sports guys running with Maxx Crosby. Without some even more problematic restructures, they can’t afford him. They just want your clicks

I'm not one expecting Maxx to come here or should I say before the Raiders fall out of contention I don't expect them to trade Maxx...but...if we were to sign him there could be a restructure/extension involved with Crosby's contract, so while very well thought out and explained, this really isn't accurate.

I can't tell another man what to do with his money, but Dak is already set for life and if he wanna really compete for it all and remain part of a highly competitive team to help him cement a real legacy, he could help bring in more talent teamwide by freeing up some of his salary.

Dak was already restructured and his base is only $1.8M. They really can't free up any money (well maybe a few hundred thousand but that doesn't help) by restructuring him.

So let's say the team trades for Crosby or some other star like Porter that costs us our other 1st next year. It's guaranteed to be a late first because the Jets get the better of the two. So it likely requires an additional pick or a player. Let's assume that additional pick isn't in 2027. That would leave us with:
1st round - no pick
2nd round - Dallas pick
3rd round - no pick
4th round - Steelers pick
5th round - no pick
6th round - 2 picks
7th round - 1 pick

That's not great...
Plus if we bring in another star, expensive player, it makes it harder (not impossible but harder) to sign Pickens.
 
CB is questionable at the moment but a pass rush does a good job at hiding it. Either go get Maxx or resign Pickens. At the present moment and in a close playoff game I'm not sure this team beats the rams with the changes they've made. Got to make this defense more of an asset when this offense/offensive line struggles.
