My thoughts and venting on where this team is right now and it's question marks going forward...
Coaching
I look at this staff, and I don't see continuity or long term setups. It scares the heck out of me, because when Parcells leaves I don't see any direction.
Parcells: This years team is the type he wanted. He deserves the good and the bad from it. The one thing I can't stand is how stubborn he gets. When something isn't working, it's ok to admit you've made a mistake and try something else to make it work. In his old age, he just doesn't budge when game planning doesn't go the way he planned. The biggest thing with Parcells is he has little to no future. He is here to win now. There's no garantee he'll even be here next year although he is under contract for 1 more year. Some players love playing for him, but there's just as many that don't enjoy playing for him.
Payton: I think I like Payton, but I don't really know because it feels like Parcells has Payton's hands tied. This is the only coach on the staff I would even consider for our next coach, but I don't feel confident in him by any means yet. I need to see more of his coaching.
Zimmer: Besdies Payton you would think he's the next guy in line for a future head coach. I don't think he's got it. He's an average defensive coordinator. He is still learning the 3-4 defense. His calling and timing of blitzes has to be aomng the worst in hte league for years. The lucky thing for him is he has some young talent on his defense.
Bowles: The one coach who I feel has done a solid job all around. We did bring in some talent (Henry and Glenn), but I've also seen the DBs play more aggresively. Every defensive backfield in the NFL will have some breakdowns throughout the year in the NFL.
Offense:
On offense you can't count on too many veterans over a 16 game season...and even less so if you make the playoffs and the seaosn becomes longer. Bledsoe, Rivera, Allen, Glenn, Johnson will all be another year older next year and another year further from their prime. These are win now players who should have reduced roles rather than be counted on as full-time starters for a whole season. I think it was JJT who predicted the Cowboys because of these vets would start off well, but got worn down by seaon's end....makes sense.
QB: After 13 years or so everyone in and out of the league knows what to expect from Bledsoe. He needs ultimate pass protection, but he can will make you competitive...usually. I have no clue what Romo or Henson has. The fact that our backups have a total of 0.5 game experience is bad, very bad. One of them should have played late last seaoson and one of them should have played yesterday. The Pats and Bills saw what Bledsoe's peak is and it wasn't enough for them. I don't think it should be enough for us either. As I've often said, to become elite again we need to invest in a legimet young QB.
WR: Glenn and Johnson should not be counted on for an enitre season as starerts at this point in their careers. They've been good and still are good. But good doesn't win playoof games, great does. Crayton has potential, but probably never more than a #2, who knows though. Need to bring in another young investment here.
RB: I like the combination of Jones and Barber. Thompson has potential too. I see no problems here.
TE: Witten is legit. He needs to be resigned though. I'm not convinced he won't shop himself around and also not convinced he enjoys playing for Parcells. Campbell is solid still. Hopefully Sean Ryan can show something to become a solid backup. No major problems here.
OL: Major, major issues obviously. Parcells canned Warhop, but I don't think Sparano is an improvement. Again, you can't count on so many over 30 year olds for an entire season. Need to add a couple players here and possibly cut ties with Rivera and maybe others like Gurode and Tucker.
