Cowboys defense elite?

During the broadcast of last year's game at Washington, Fox announcer John Lynch said the Cowboys defense was one pass rusher away from being elite.

Lawrence, Gregory, Hardy.... can these guys step up and make the defense elite and prove Lynch right? Is the return of Lee and growth of Crawford, Hitchens and others make it elite? Just think.

Lot better than last year, I will be happy with real good. Elite may be a reach this year.

I think by all metrics it was an average defense last year. Are the off season acquisitions enough to catapult them into a top 5/elite unit. I dont think so, but no reason this shouldn't be at the very least a top 12 unit.

Last year they caught some breaks where bottom of the NFL talent at key positions somehow played way over their heads to get average production. There is likely to be some regression there which will partially offset all the talent that was added. I'd think being in the top 10-15 range would be a solid accomplishment for the unit.

I think the easily have the potential to be elite... look at the difference between the 2013 Panthers team and the 2014 Panthers team with the main difference being Hardy... that's what an elite pass rush can do for a team

We have yet to see an elite pass rush in practice or the one preseason game so it is way too soon to know.

I look at it like this. We were middle of the pack last year because we ran a lot. I actually think we did too much and it cost us points, with Romo and the weapons we have we could easily put up 30 a game. I think we will do that if we tweak that pass/run ratio to around 55 pass/45 run, and I think we actually have a more explosive running game without Murray. We won't grind as well but we should have more long runs for scores.

We have improved talent on all 3 levels and we have a player or two at each level that can make some game changing plays. We were a bad call away of playing for a Super Bowl against a team we beat up on at there place early in the year. I don't think our D needs to be elite to take that next step. If they can show some improvement over where they ranked in yards and points, and get more pressure and still force turnovers without needing to be protected by a running game, we should be a serious contender.

Who is this bottom of the nfl talent at key positions that played over their head you are talking about?

I seen plenty of pressure against San Diego game and that's all quarters we played. Its just preseason and I get that.

To have an "elite" defense in my eyes... if were just going off of paper since we havent started the season to take into account stats..

I say no since the only true Pro bowler/difference maker is Greg Hardy... and yes I know Lee is a general when he is on the field but he has yet to do it for 16 games..

They have a chance to have an elite DL. Hardy, Craw, Law, Mince could become their best group up front in many years. Not a lot of proven depth behind them, but Gregory is certainly intriguing.

Linebackers are questionable just in terms of availability. Hitch played well last season. Wilson is a promising addition. Lee and McClain could potentially form a very dynamic pairing, but Lee will have to prove he can stay healthy and McClain is basically the definition of a question mark right now.

Secondary has more depth than last year but is mostly filled with inconsistent players. How they perform if the team is able to muster a pass rush is the biggest defensive question for me.

Last season the team was actually awful in yards per play. They overcame that with help from TOP. But more importantly to me was their ability make big plays. They forced a lot of stops and turnovers in a timely fashion. From early on it was surprising to watch the seemingly marginal guys they rolled out there actually make the plays their positional antecedents had not. With an infusion of talent, you'd hope that the big plays would increase or at the least maintain.

The problem is that the schedule is going to be working against them early. They face four potent offenses with two of their best players out. Establishing a similar pattern to last year in terms of the offense and defense helping each other will be vital in those early games.

Don't worry about credits...the press surely will start out predicting a ton of points scored against the Cowboys' defense.

Go figure why...

I don't see them being elite(top 3) unless they find a true ball hawk FS. Maybe B. Jones can be that, but I don't think it will be soon enough to have a truly elite defense. Top 8 is this groups peak I think.

Hoping and praying Jalen Ramsey somehow ends up a Cowboy next draft. I think he's the next Polamalu level FS. Probably wishful thinking though since he's almost assuredly going in the top 5 next year, but that guy is a game changer.
