Cowboys Defense improving

The Cowboys defense is actually getting better as the season goes on:

They allowed 77 points in the first four games, but only 63 points in the last four games. That constitutes 19.25 points per game versus 15.75 points per game.

They've also only allowed 1230 yards in the last 4 games compared to 1433 in the first four.

They created 5 turnovers in both the first 4 games and last 4 games.

Ultimately this is why I'm so furious with Randy Gregory. He could have really helped this team, but ultimately he is too dumb, and yes I will call him dumb. Whatever he is dealing with whether he is using marijuana medically or recreationally there are other avenues. At this rate, I just want him off the team. Pass rush needs to be our number one priority next year and hopefully Jaylon Smith if he recovers can assist with that coming off the edge. I certainly hope we don't play him at MLB. He is an obvious WLB to me.

Notes: Some people may think that playing the Browns skews the numbers here, so let's take a look by removing them altogether.

If we compare the first 4 games averaged out versus the next 3 games ignoring the Browns, they improved from 19.25 points per game to 17.67 points per game. Yards per game improved from 358.25 to 336. We improved in both rushing yards allowed per game and passing yards allowed per game.

Devil's advocate in me would ask whether every team had to remove the worst team they played? Nine other teams have played the Browns as well. It is also worth noting that the offense has also gotten better over these last few games.

What's most encouraging here is that the teams in the sample size used are significantly better teams than the original 4 teams we played.

The sample group (last 4 games minus browns) has a win percentage of .479 versus the first 4 teams we played who have a win percentage of .390*.

*Given that we still have yet to beat a team over .500 I would still say we should start Romo over Dak, but that is neither here nor there. Two of our wins come from the two worst teams in the NFL and we have yet to beat a single team that is even in second place in their division and even when we have achieved this it will be against what is probably the worst division in football which is the AFC North. We were gifted with an extremely easy schedule this year.

I do not buy into the crap of not beating teams with a winning record. Most winning teams fall into that category. But some fans only apply it as being bad to us.
I am not knocking the OP for this, I am just making a comment before that is brought up.

We held the browns to 33 yards in the 2nd half. I don't care how bad a team is, as in the NFL that is still hard to do. Even if they didn't have the ball that much in the 2nd half. It is still hard to do.

The D is playing very well in the 4th quarter this year. Look at the Eagles game, in the 4th quarter, the D made 4 huge stops, and forced a fumble, a key play. They sacked Wentz on another key play.
Last year, we would have lost that game.

We had all quality wins this year and the D has stepped up in everyone of those making 4th quarter stops.
now we are fighting through some injuries, and the depth will be tested in the secondary. Steelers and Commanders will be the 2 toughest offenses. Hopefully Church will be back, as well as Mo by the time we play the Giants.

"yet to beat a team over .500"
Commanders: 4-3-1

And if the criteria is "over .500 when we played them", then we've done that twice already.

The following teams have winning records AND have beaten teams above 500 more than once.

Atlanta Falcons, Detroit Lions, Houston Texans, Minnesota Vikings, New York Giants, Pittsburgh Steelers, Washington Commanders*

I'm not at all suggesting that this is the smoking gun statistic. In fact I think strength of schedule is a lot more important. But I do think you have to beat teams like this. The Commanders are barely over 500 (but they are, thanks for pointing that out), but when you look at who they beat, it becomes less impressive. I guess what I am trying to say here is that the devil is in the details.

Atlanta has beaten the Raiders and Denver. I think that is impressive, especially if you look at their entire body of work.

We haven't beat anyone yet.

Who on our schedule is anyone? We've beaten 3 teams that are contending for their division. There's no juggernauts out there except for maybe the Pats.

Like I said..this beating teams with or without winning records, strength of schedule is all BS & hype. It is something for analyst to have reason why or why not they predict teams to win or lose. It is for the odds makers. It is for the fans to justify an agenda.

All I know is that we have won 7 straight, and most fairly convincingly. And a hard fought come back win to tie and win in OT. And that 4th quarter and OT we out played the opponent, that had a winning record at the time.

I don't care at the end of the season, if all of our wins are against teams with losing records, as we would have had something to do with that also. But it does mean, however, we are in the playoffs, so who gives a dang about it. It's the playoffs and anything can and will happen.

Our D is average, need to keep improving to win playoff games.

Didn't several of those teams have winning records at the time we played them?

See that is what bothers me. If you take the loss off those teams record that the Cowboys gave them how bad or good do they look? Who have the Patriots played? Or the Vikings? Or Falcons or Raiders?

There's nothing average about how they are playing. I know that's the cool thing to say and they don't get sacks but its time to start calling this team a good defense. Not great but they surely are are better than anyone wants to admit.
