Cowboys' defense must find complement to Ware

Ask any defensive coordinator in the NFL how important an effective pass rush can be. It forces quarterbacks to make quick decisions that can lead to turnovers, and it disrupts the timing of an offense.

Last season, the Cowboys' defense racked up 34 sacks, 11½ of which belonged to star linebacker DeMarcus Ware. The next highest total was 4½ by Greg Ellis, who missed seven games because of a knee injury.

The Cowboys' secondary was one of the best in the league until Ellis was lost for the season. Strong safety Roy Williams led the team with five interceptions, but the cornerback trio of Anthony Henry, Terence Newman and Aaron Glenn produced just four picks.

The 2007 season's big question will be how new head coach Wade Phillips handles his underachieving defense. As the defensive coordinator in San Diego last year, Phillips' unit topped the NFL with 61 sacks, led by Pro Bowl linebacker Shawne Merriman's 17.

For Dallas, Ware should have a monster season with Phillips calling the defensive shots, but the Cowboys must find another pass rusher to keep opposing offenses from double-teaming Ware. In 2006, Merriman had the help of fellow Chargers linebacker Shaun Phillips, who finished with 11½ sacks.

Dallas is stacked at the outside linebacker position, with Ellis, rookie first-round pick Anthony Spencer and '06 first-rounder Bobby Carpenter heading into training camp competing for the same position.

Ellis is entering his 10th season and is trying to come back from an Achilles' tendon injury. Last year, Ellis switched from defensive end to OLB and performed well until his injury.

Spencer, a former Purdue star, supplies some insurance if Ellis isn't 100 percent. Spencer played end in college, and it might take some time for him to adjust to a new position and the speed of the NFL game.

The odd man out is last year's 18th overall pick, Carpenter, who had trouble fitting into the 3-4 defense and finished his rookie year with 15 tackles and a meager 1½ sacks in 13 games. His only start was in the season finale against Detroit.

Phillips' defense has always produced sacks. San Diego's sack total increased each year that Phillips was the D-coordinator, but if he cannot find a pass rusher to team with Ware, the Cowboys can likely expect another disappointing season.

Does anyone think Ayodele's job in the middle is secure?

On the Bradie James thing--- I really thought he was getting it, until the Lions QB absolutely ABUSED him in last seasons final game, and then popped off to the media about it. James better get it in gear, we have alot of real good LB's.

I remember that - they said they could tell he was "lost" out there. Embarrassing to say the least.

..that Bradie James wore down as the season went along.

Now is that actually what happened..?

Or was it the scheme that BP refused to change that was being exposed and 'wore down'..?

There were lot's of other parts that 'wore down' in that last 5 games.

So we'll see.

I think every player that ends up starting a couple of years in this league eventually gets enough game film on him to get a good read on his strengths and weaknesses.

Bradie, along with several others, is going to have to see what is the problem and correct it.

If it's conditioning, he'll know it.

If it's scheme, the coaches will make changes.

I like Bradie. He's a guy we need to suceed because we can't possibly afford anymore investment in the LBer positions.

I think Burnett is probably gone with the arrival of Spencer..not Bradie James.as an inside Lber.

We'll see.

James cannot cover worth a damn. That became obvious as the season came to its end. I really doubt that he can improve.
iF HE CONTINUES TO SUCK, will you still try and blame BP for it?

We finally find a replacement for Haley in Ware and now we have to find a complement to Ware? I know that is true and that is why I liked the Spencer pick so much this year. At some point we fix the pass rush so we can stop drafting LB's in the first round. I'd like to spend those 2 #1's next year on another position. Phillips got the job in part because he can turn the defense around. I'm ready to see some results.

Depends on how bad Burnett wants to play.

Akin was one of the most consitent players on defense IMO last year and the coordinators loved his play last year, his first at ILB. He is also decent in coverage. However, most of those coordinators are gone, so I think it is fair game as to what Phillips does.

I am going to be interested to see how much control Phillips has of this team as HC; I wonder/hope if he is going to bench players with high salaries or high draft picks in favor of guys he feels may be better suited for the position, if need be to give the team the best chance to win.

*cough Bradie James as an example if he plays bad cough*

Honestly, I love Burnett as a player and I think he has great potential, being so fast and strong. However, he is undersized at 240 for ILB and I don't know if he can take all the punishment. He could be our version of Donnie Edwards who can stay back in coverage when we send everyone to blitz or stunt and have Burnett to protect the underneath passes.

Wierd thought: Burnett played Safety in college as a true freshman; he has the physique and definitely the strength of S. Taylor; is Burnett decent in coverage?

That is what makes Phillips' 3-4 so unique it tailors to the LBs quite well.

Phillips' defense, produced sacks everywhere he went so now he comes to Dallas, it's "what if" he can't find a pass rusher opposite Ware, it's too much talent at the LB position for this defense to fail and most fans know more about: Burnett, Carpenter, Ayodole, James, Ellis, and Ware than Carlos Zepeda.

There is no doubt in my mind that the Phillips' 3-4 will be as successful in Dallas, as it has been everywhere else.
