Cowboys doing Patrick Crayton wrong?
June, 1, 2010 Jun 14:39PM ETEmail Print Share By Matt MosleyIRVING, Texas -- In what has to qualify as the most publicized third-receiver controversy of the NFL's modern era, Patrick Crayton continued to be a no-show at the Cowboys' organized team activities Tuesday. The good folks at NFL Live, which is anchored by Trey Wingo, even asked the NFC East blog to comment on the Crayton situation for today's show.

In short, Crayton's worried that he won't be given an honest chance to beat out rookie Dez Bryant or veteran Roy Williams for playing time based on how much money (and attention) the organization has invested in those players. And by the way, Crayton's absolutely right. There's no question that he's a better receiver than Williams, but then, he's not guaranteed $9 million this season. The Cowboys could use Crayton as an extra body in training camp and then decide to dump him and his $2 million salary before the regular season.

So you can see why Crayton's in no hurry to participate in voluntary practices when he'd basically serve as an insurance policy for offensive coordinator Jason Garrett. As he told ESPN 103.3's "Ben and Skin Show" on Friday, Crayton's hoping the Cowboys will simply release him and allow him to sign with a team that has an obvious need at receiver. And that's what other teams around the league are waiting on as well. On Tuesday afternoon, I reached out to Crayton's agent, Fred Lyles, to see if he'd shed some light on the situation.

"This is like interviewing for a job, and the positions already being filled," said Lyles of Crayton's situation. "Dez is going to be on the team no matter how he performs. Roy's going to be on the team no matter how he performs. And it's the same thing with Miles [Austin]."

Lyles said that Crayton doesn't want his family to be in limbo in terms of where they'll be living this September. Honestly, I can see both sides of this issue. The Cowboys know that Crayton's a very reliable receiver who could help them in a pinch, so they don't want to give him up for nothing. Other teams look at the Cowboys' depth at receiver, and they don't feel the need to move a draft pick for him.

Tim MacMahon of ESPNDallas.com thinks that Crayton could hurt the club's chemistry if he remains on the roster while not receiving much playing time. I disagree with that assessment. Crayton fell under the spell of T.O. when he was with the team, but now that's not an issue. If Crayton's on the roster, I think he'll conduct himself in a professional manner. And given Williams' penchant for dropping balls and the inexperience of Bryant, I think the Cowboys would eventually get Crayton back in the rotation.

Now I'm curious to hear what you guys think. Are you tired of the Crayton saga? If I decided to write the definitive Crayton biography this offseason, would you wait in line at Barnes and Noble to buy it?

I think we need to give him what he wants a trade. Did Dallas do him wrong he was a 7th rd pick and has made a good living in Dallas. Good player but once Dez was drafted even Crayton knew his days were numbered can't figure out why others can't figure that out.

If they can't find a trade within a few days they need to go ahead and release him. He is getting screwed over.

He is under contract and unless dallas can get what they want for him in a trade, dallas is under no obligation to release him so that he can get himself and his family situated in another city. tough but that's how it works. The guy was and is being paid good money and will serve as a valuable contingency plan between now and the season in case god forbid someone gets hurt in front of him. Dallas has developed his skill set and given him opportunities during his career and he should remember that. moving in sept, is it that big of a deal? either way his kids will have to go to a new school.

look at what happened to the utah jazz. nice team lets d.fisher go after he signs with them because of his kid's medical problems and then he comes back to bury them in the playoffs. sports is about business and winning. not about loyalty or being nice.

Do we really want this guy on the team? He's pissed. He's gonna be worse than TO. Just release him.

He's being paid millions. Doing him wrong?

Really?

Fine, do me wrong all day long!

i don't know...would we want him if one of the top 3 Wrs gets hurt in TC for an extended period of time? we have no incentive to release him except for the theory that he will be a team killer. which he won't IMO. and even if he DOES act up, he'll be gone before training camp breaks and the season starts so it's not like it would be for an extended time or the whole season. it's insurance. nothing more nothing less.

lol, yep someone getting paid millions is getting screwed over no matter what the situation is.. :lmao2: I'd love to be a medicore NFL talent like Crayton, and get screwed over. Give me an *** break dude, if he is good enough and can take his game to another level at 31 lol & make the coaches take notice then sure he can whine all he wants, but the guy is just an average WR. Take your paycheck this year & then you'll have plenty of legs left to play elsewhere for a couple years after you get your walking papers

The only receiver who would be a major blow if hurt would be Austin, and no one is replacing Austin.

lol, yep someone getting paid millions is getting screwed over no matter what the situation is.. :lmao2: I'd love to be a medicore NFL talent like Crayton, and get screwed and still getting paid the big bucks to be a backup. Give me a break dude, if he is good enough and can take his game to another level at 31 lol & make the coaches take notice then sure he can whine all he wants, but the guy is just an average WR. We have 3, maybe 4 guys better than him & yes he is an insurance type of guy, but so be it.. He has no choice but to accept that role this season... Take your paycheck this year & then you'll have plenty of legs left to play elsewhere for a couple years after you get your walking papers

He won't make the team unless someone gets hurt. The right thing to do is to release him.

He badmouthed the team. There's no way he needs to be anywhere near it.

my bad, kept hitting send then it said to edit the message, didn't realize my posts had gone through. If Crayton is still here come training camp, he will be a professional I am betting b/c when it all comes down to it, the dude is a classy guy in my eyes even if others view him differently. Crayton will make the team, only way that wouldn't happen is if one of these WR's they picked up catches their eye & they could put him on ST's while not having to take the chance of losing him to another team, but I don't see that happening.

There's no way he makes the team. He's 31 and will do nothing but go downhill from here. I'd take a chance on a rookie free agent over him.

Edit: I guess 31 isn't that old for a receiver, but we already know what he can do and it's not that much.

I had no idea they stopped mailing him his pay checks, wow that is so wrong...

well I say this much

Crayton has done himself no favors

by not showing up to the OTA's

yep, if I was in that position and had been with the Organization for 6 years I would have felt comfortable enough to go to Jerry or Stephens' office and tell them how I feel about it, you would get a lot more accomplished that way then going through the media and whining like a clown.

That I agree with.

jj should hold onto him until he's ready / sure he wants to part with him.
sure crayton makes some interesting points, but the fact is he's under contract, one he happily chose to sign. if jj wants to use him as insurance then it's his right. if he wants to sit him on the bench the entire year and pay him a cool 2 million it's his right. crayton should have kept his public mouth shut and made his request to management behind closed doors and then accepted the outcome. like it or not he's under jj's control and if he's not happy with the way jj's doing business then he can retire and come work my job for a week to see just how bad he has it. if not then he needs to keep his mouth shut, do his job and draw his paycheck.

can you say "privileged?"

My understanding is the Cowboys aren't mailing anyone paychecks. All they pay is per-diem until the regular season starts, at which time everyone who makes the team is paid their salary in 17 weekly checks.

If Crayton gets cut before the regular season starts, he doesn't get paid any of his 2 million dollar salary. Therein lies the problem.
