Cowboys | Doug Free expected to be asked to take pay cut
Sun, 07 Apr 2013 10:47:59 -0700

The Dallas Cowboys likely will ask OT Doug Free to take a pay cut this offseason and probably would release him if he refused to accept the pay cut.

Don't see a reason why he wouldn't take the pay cut.

He get's released it would probably end up worse for him.

Now is the time to do it while there are several much better players out there. That right there should scare him into accepting the significant paycut. That's a better option than cutting him due to the dead money he will create next year and he would be a nice option to have as a swing tackle.

Another water is wet comment from Calvin.

He's almost as bad as Mickey Spagnola on "Talking [Stupidly About the] Cowboys"

Doug Free WILL take a paycut this year. That is a given.

The only uncertainty is:
a) How much?
b) Will he accept it and remain a Cowboy or get cut and accept a paycut with another team?

And I wouldn't be surprised to see him cut at the end of camp even if he accepts a paycut.

I wouldn't bring him into camp without a paycut pre-negotiated as we run the risk of him getting injured and being stuck with his salary the whole year.

We have no intention of paying him $8M this year which is his salary. So there is no way we can let him come to any football activities and risk him getting injured with that contract in place. It is too much risk for too little reward.

IMO, both sides know what terms Free will come back to the Cowboys under. It is just a matter as to whether they can agree about his worth. If they don't he gets released June 2nd so we can free up cap space and he can try to latch on somewhere else. But it has been a buyer's market so far and he is coming off a very bad year so I don't think he has much leverage here. Guys like Eric Winston, Brandon Moore and Tyson Clabo are unemployed right now.

I'd only bring him back for a vet min salary with some incentives built into the deal. That way he could serve as swing tackle until we have someone else ready to take over the role. I'm still not certain how high the team is on Weems but he seems like another Parnell type situation where we stole a PS OL and then tried to develop him on the active roster. It actually looks better than our old habit of burning 3rd round picks on lesser players.

I feel his agent will be the voice of reason and refuse a pay cut. It's not his fault we gave him a contract. Players accept pay cuts or restructures to help the team; not quite so often because of a poor year.

He sucks, but if I were him, no pay cut, and someone will sign him as depth while he pockets what he's owed.

He would be stupid to take that stance with 3 much better RTs out there on the free agent market. Not only would he have to sit and wait for all them to sign to even get a look but he would have to settle for probably half what he will still get from the Cowboys after a pay cut. The only way him playing hardball on a paycut will work is if all three of them are gone, the draft is over, and there are still teams looking for a RT. Thats not likely to happen.
