There are currently 7 rounds in the Draft. In past years it went much deeper. But for this opinion based thread we'll stop at 7 rounds.

Who is the best 1st round pick in Cowboys History?
Who is the best 2nd round pick in Cowboys History?
Who is the best 3rd round pick in Cowboys History?
Who is the best 4th round pick in Cowboys History?
Who is the best 5th round pick in Cowboys History?
Who is the best 6th round pick in Cowboys History?
Who is the best 7th round pick in Cowboys History?

If you feel the need to explain your answer by all means go ahead.

Here is a link to every Cowboys Draft as a head start in your research.

Make sure you remind us what year the pick happened.

Hard to argue with that list though.

UDFA...2003, Tony Romo.

I'd almost be curious to see a worst draft choices in franchise history thread somewhere down the road. We'll have plenty of time though, it's going to be a longgg offseason.

I do plan on that thread in the near future.

i was tempted to put witten but i went with the more important position

Lilly and Emmitt are tossups. Ditto Renfro/Allen in Round 2, and Hayes/Wright in Round 7. Tom Rafferty in R4 and Blaine Nye in R5 were pretty solid for us for many years.

1. Emmitt Smith
2. Larry Allen
3. Jason Witten
4. Bradie James
5. Herschel Walker
6. George Andrie
7. Bob Hayes

i was not so much a gleam in my Daddy's eye at the time but Bob Lilly to get it all started has to be tops in my book.

1. Bob Lilly 1961
2. Mel Renfro 1964
3. Harvey Martin 1973
4. Pat Donovan 1975
5. Herschel Walker 1985
6. George Andrie 1962
7. Rayfield Wright 1967

1 - Bob Lilly, '61
2 - Larry Allen, '94
3 - Jason Witten, '03
4 - Pat Donovan, '75
5 - Herschel Walker, '85
6 - George Andrie, '62
7 - Rayfield Wright, '67 (Over Hayes because Wright was taken in the combined draft, rather than the much smaller draft of '64. Hayes was a 7th round pick at 88. That'd be a 3rd rounder today!)
8 - Kevin Gogan, '87
9 - Kenneth Gant, '90
10 - Steve DeBerg, '77 (Just kidding!)
11 - Jethro Pugh, '65
12 - Larry Brown, '91
13 - Herbert Scott, '75
14 - Scott Laidlaw, '75 (HM: Billy Shaw, '61, chose the AFL over the NFL but is now in Canton.)
15 - Gene Foster, '65
16 - Larry Cole, '68
17 - Les Strayhorn, '73
18 - Bill Frank, '64
19 - Jim Stiger, '63
20 - Amos Bullocks, '62
UDFA - Cornell Green, '62

I love Romo as much as anyone, but we've had some bang-up UDFAs. I don't know he's even top 5 yet in that category.

1. Bob Lilly, 1961
2. Larry Allen, 1994
3. Harvey Martin, 1973
4. Tom Rafferty, 1976
5. Walt Garrison, 1966
6. DD Lewis, 1968
7. Jay Ratliff, 2005

Round 3, 4 & & were difficult to choose.

I had to leave off one of my current favorite players in Witten. While he definitely would be deserving, I think Harvey Martin had an overall bigger impact on his teams than Witten has.

I chose Ratliff over Bob Hayes because he plays a position that is not often given a lot of attention yet he is making a ton of noise in the league as a nose guard. And he's doing it playing a position where he is considered undersized and forced to take on constant double teams.

89 to today

1 Troy Kenneth Aikman QB 1989 have to have a QB to run the show

2 Darren Ray Woodson SS 1992

3 Mark Matthew Stepnoski C 1989 weighing at#270

4 Doug Free OT NI 2007

5 David Jonathan Buehler K 2007

6 John Matthew Phillips TE 2009

7 Jeremiah J. Ratliff DE 2005

JMO, but that might be the best draft pick in the history of our franchise.

1st- Too many awesome candidates, but I'll go with Aikman in 1989
2nd- Came down to Mel Renfro and Larry Allen, went with Allen, 1994
3rd- Witten 2003 or Harvey Martin 1973. Going with Witten 2003
4th- Pat Donovan 1975
5th- Herschel Walker 1985 or Blaine Nye 1968. Nye was definitely the better player, though Walker ended up being the more important player to our history.
6th- George Andrie 1962
7th- Wonder how many other teams have two HOF's with 7th rd picks. Bob Hayes 1964, Rayfield Wright 1967. Honorable mention Leon Lett 1991 and Jay Ratliff 2005

The rounds I struggled with were not where there were few candidates, but many. I chose Emmitt because he was the 17th pick of the Draft. It was hard to put him over Bob Lilly.

I chose Rayfield Wright over Bob Hayes in the 7th round because he was an all pro or pro bowl player more.

I chose Larry Allen over Mel Renfro in the 2nd because Mel was the 17th pick and Larry the 46th pick in their drafts.

I don't think you can go wrong with any of those picks. By today's NFL size Roger Staubach would have been a 5th round pick for us at 129.

Was Staubach a 12 rounder?
