Cowboys' draft has good news for Rico Gathers, bad for Brice Butler 22hTodd Archer Pearson says Goo

Andy Jones maybe. After a hit start, he couldn't even make the 53-man roster last year. But I think Noah Brown has a pretty good chance to knock off Butler, especially if the team only keeps 5 receivers. Butler hasn't progressed as well as the team had hoped, and he had an awful finish to 2016. And he's also only under a one-year deal compared to the four years they would have Brown under contract.

I think Brown has some excellent traits to develop and unless he struggles badly, I see him making this team.
I'd bet almost anything they keep 6 WR. You don't re-sign a guy and then draft two more thinking you're going short at a position.

They're going to move away from 2 TE sets so there's probably a battle between Smith and Hanna for the 4th TE/FB spot. Only one of those guys makes the roster. So, end of the day...6 WR, 3 TE, 1 FB/TE. That's my guess anyways.

With all due respect to Jaylon's progress and the confidence the Cowboys have in his recovery, I don't think it was wise to not draft a linebacker. Just saying.

Not sure we are that bad off at LB but I might shake the trees on DeAndre Levy just to see what's up.

I think that would be a good guess. Hanna is a non-factor to me until proven otherwise. At this point, I think he's done in Dallas.

I'm wondering if former Cowboy Andrew Gachkar isn't still on the radar? Vet minimum deal of course, but he knows the defense and is a good backup/special teams guy.

I'm with you on that. I really like Noah Brown. I see him making Butler very uncomfortable during camp and ultimately unseating him.

i think 6wr is likely also, but i think the roster space comes from the RB. it seems they will attempt to replace dunbar's threat with the double slot receiver threat.

Rico will be interesting, I want to believe but Im not sure if this kid just has a super duper image of himself. We will see 1st hand this summer.

I think Noah Brown or Andy Jones are going to have to look incredibly good for them to knock Butler off the roster.
Have to disagree. Like Archer said in his article, the Cowboys aren't married to Butler's contract, and could potentially cut him loose if one of these young WR prospects show something. I like Butler, but he needs to be more consistent.

FWIW, some people I know have told me that the team thinks very highly of Swaim, and right now he's in the lead to be Witten's eventual successor.
Not doubting what you are saying but I find that really hard to believe. I think Swaim can be productive, not sure I see that type of player.

I'm not suggesting he's a future Hall of Famer, but they like what they've seen so far and he's the best candidate at this point.

I was thinking more of a number two type TE based on what I have seen.

What did Iverson say about practice? Oh right, we are talking about practice. Dude needs to make the 53 and get actual game time before he deserves any hype.

Football practice and basketball practice is the ultimate apples and oranges comparison.

Or just catch tough passes. Something Brice struggles with.
That's going to be the major issue, right or wrong nobody remembers when you drop the first and second down short yardage pass.
But when you dropped the big ones especially in Jerry's world, the free pass may go out the window
