I've never really done a mock draft because I'm not much of a draft head aside from finding a few pet cats that I like. However, this year I've learned a little bit more and figured I'd share my ideas, particularly after the latest Martellus Bennett greatness posted on Twitter.

Cowboys Draft Predictions for 2010

Round 1 - Mike Iupati, OG, Idaho
The Cowboys' offensive line is aging, and with the emergence of Doug Free as a legitimate potential starter at the Tackle position, the selection of Iupati would make sense to help anchor a new generation along the offensive line at tackle and guard to protect Romo for the foreseeable future. Iupati is a mean, mauling-type lineman that would play well on Andre Gurode's left side and might help add more tread to Flozell Adams' tires.

Round 2 - Dexter McCluster, WR, Mississippi
While we have plenty of players that are strong contributors at the WR position, the selection of McCluster would possibly give us a legitimate designated kick and punt returner as well as a potential future contributor on offense. He also gives the Cowboys a little bit of insurance in the event that the Roy Williams trade doesn't work out for the organization in the next season or two.

Round 3a, via trade (Martellus Bennett) - Dorin Dickerson, FB/H-Back, Pittsburgh
The selection of Dorin Dickerson as a FB/H-Back helps to fill two roster spots for the Cowboys this offseason as well as assist in a third problem area on the offense. Following a pre-draft or draft-day trade of Martellus Bennett, the Cowboys will use their additional 3rd round pick in order to not only replace Bennett, but to also to replace Deon "Cricket" Anderson and help solve the Cowboys' short-yardage rushing problems. Dickerson gives the Cowboys two threats in short-yardage with Marion Barber at HB, but also allows for some versatility so that opposing defenses don't expect the "off-tackle right" or "stretch right" to Marion Barber every time we have 3rd and 1.

Round 3b - Robert Johnson, S, Utah
Robert Johnson comes with our later 3rd round pick, which will likely anger many of the Hook 'Em Horns fans on the board. However, Johnson likely has the greatest upside of any safety not named Eric or Earl. A 2009 All-Mountain West First Team selection, Johnson has excelled in big games against big-name opponents in Alabama, TCU, BYU, and California. He not only has some of those Zoner-critical "ball-hawking" skills, but isn't afraid to bring the wood on receivers, tight ends, and running backs alike. All of these qualities and myself being a former FS and CB make Robert Johnson my pet cat pick for 2010.

Round 4 - Legarrette Blount, RB, Oregon
In the 4th round, the Cowboys look to select Blount out of Oregon after possibly trading Tashard Choice for a future 1st or 2nd round pick for the 2011 NFL Draft. While Blount had a few blemishes on his record at Oregon, including the infamous sucker punch following a loss to Boise State, as an athlete he is definitely a 1st or 2nd round running back talent that can be had for great value. Bringing a player of his caliber with a few personal issues into what is now a highly professional and no-nonsense locker room will help him to mature quickly and become part of a winning culture that values good on and off the field behavior. He also may serve as a stop-gap for that 3rd running back position behind Marion Barber and Felix Jones, helping to position the Cowboys for Marion Barber's future replacement in the 2011 NFL Draft.

Rounds 6, 7 - Multiple Possibilities
* John Fox, OT, Miami - he could slip due to heart issues and other injuries, but "The U" has rarely not put out quality players on both sides of the ball.
* Danario Alexander, WR, Missouri - another potential future WR in the event the Roy Williams trade doesn't work for the Cowboys long term. Alexander is a tall, underrated receiving threat that spent most of his time as a 2nd and even 3rd option behind Jeremy Maclin due to injury before his junior season.
* John Estes, C, Hawaii - a good center prospect allows the Cowboys to finally cut ties with Cory Procter.

The first 4 players you mention are particular favorites of mine, but how did we get that extra 3rd round pick??

I thought that too, I was assuming we got it from the trade of Martellus Bennett he mentioned in the original 3rd round pick.

I see someone listened to what I said in PMs.

I believe the top 3 picks are our top 3 hopes for rounds 1, 2, and 3. If those guys are not there it will not shock me to see a lot of wheeling and dealing.

Iupati gone...either trade out of round 1 or take Pouncey. If we trade out of 1 we might still take Pouncey in the 2nd if he is there or we could wait for Ducasse.

I believe this Draft is Offense oriented and those top 3 picks on his board are the exact 3 Dallas covets.

Oh, and I would love to trade Bennett, because I think Phillips is a harder worker and Dickerson fits our Offense better as a hybrid FB/H-back/TE. Here's hoping you are right about that.

I think Robert Johnson will be a steal for someone.

I wont complain too much if we get him, but the issues he showed during the Senior Bowl game and some of the comments by Mayock after watching his film do worry me some. He could have easily been flagged for 3 or 4 holding calls in that Senior Bowl game. I think Mayock's comment was he saw the same type of thing in another Idaho game he watched the film of (maybe the bowl game, cant remember). I think those that believe he's an iron clad lock to start from day one here if we got him might be disappointed a little. He could need a year or so of good coaching.

Round 2 - Dexter McCluster, WR, Mississippi
While we have plenty of players that are strong contributors at the WR position, the selection of McCluster would possibly give us a legitimate designated kick and punt returner as well as a potential future contributor on offense. I just dont see it because I dont see him having a role of more than a kick/punt returner. He's been more of a runner than receiver in college, and we dont need a RB unless they surprise us and either dump Barber or trade Choice. And at only 5'8 (If that) he doesnt have any future as a fulltime WR.

This is another one I dont see, unless they moved him to WR and tried to develop him there. I also dont think they are trading Bennett.

Round 3b - Robert Johnson, S, Utah
Robert Johnson comes with our later 3rd round pick, which will likely anger many of the Hook 'Em Horns fans on the board. However, Johnson likely has the greatest upside of any safety not named Eric or Earl. All of these qualities and myself being a former FS and CB make Robert Johnson my pet cat pick for 2010.

Would be a nice addition, especially if we got him this late. I'd still prefer Earl Thomas or the kid from South Florida though.

Round 4 - Legarrette Blount, RB, Oregon
In the 4th round, the Cowboys look to select Blount out of Oregon after possibly trading Tashard Choice for a future 1st or 2nd round pick for the 2011 NFL Draft. I'm guessing because of all his issues, he wont be on our draft board and will be removed from alot of teams draft boards. If they traded Choice (and I wouldnt do it unless it was for a 1st rd pick, preferably in THIS draft) then RB does become a need. I'm loving Ben Tate from Auburn.

Rounds 6, 7 - Multiple Possibilities
* John Fox, OT, Miami - he could slip due to heart issues and other injuries, but "The U" has rarely not put out quality players on both sides of the ball.

* John Estes, C, Hawaii - a good center prospect allows the Cowboys to finally cut ties with Cory Procter.

The only comment I'd make here is I think Fox will go alot earlier than this, in spite of the potential health issue.

I understand people are all concerned about McCluster's height as a WR, but I would like to remind everyone again that Steve Smith of the Panthers is 5'9" on a good day.

Steve Smith is an exceptional route runner who could jump through the roof, he also had explosive speed coming out of college. Wasnt he a true WR in college?

This is true too, but McCluster has the tools to excel out of the backfield as well as in the slot a la Wes Welker (shifty, quick but not fast, good hands). Gives us a true dual-slot threat possibility with Crayton on the other side.

There aren't many other receivers I like too much except Danario Alexander because of his size.

I would rather get rid of Phillips because if Marty B makes his full potential, he can be JerMicheal Finely

Using the exceptional to make an exception for someone else is really stretching it.

There are few true WRs who were that size...unlike Dex, guys like and Smith and Welker played WR their entire careers. They are truly unique.
Maybe Dexter can be that too, but that's a big maybe. I do like him, but maybe not in the 2nd.

Very nice! One of the better mocks I have seen. Very realistic and not filled with a bunch of unrealistic pet cats.

Alternate Selections

These selections may occur based upon what is there and what isn't there when it comes time for us to pick at #27. I don't have much to say write-up wise, as I might do a more extensive mock draft later, but for now I'll just list the round and the player.

Round 1 - Kyle Wilson, CB, Boise State
Round 2 (via trade out of Round 1) - Vladimir Ducasse, OT, UMass
Round 2 - Golden Tate, WR, Notre Dame
Rounds 3-7 - I think we stay put with what's on my board...we'll see!
