This will be a little bit different type of thread. This is more of a zoom out and big picture perspective rather than focusing on in season wins and losses.
We have had some really nice teams over the years that seemed to find a way to crash and burn in the playoffs, but MOST of the time we are putting an inferior product on the field.
There are many reasons for that but there are three reasons that this team fails to get over the hump year in and year out.
1. This team has a very inconsistent, odd draft process, especially for a team that wants to draft its entire team.
A. We seem to change draft philosophies every few years as coordinators change, especially on defense. That leads to square pegs in round holes as it pertains to the philosophy of that side of the ball.
B. We reach for need far too often which results in a swing and a miss.
C. For some reason round two of the draft is usually some sort of odd duck outlier pick. Who saw Schoonmaker drafted in 2? Bossman fat?
D. Insistence on drafting small school players instead of power conferences.
E. Lack of ability to evaluate certain positions or properly understand the importance of strong interior players on defense.
TLDR version: We have drafted poorly last several years outside of round 1.
2. The Cowboys insist on being mediocre and winning meaningless games which affects draft position (which also ties into #1 above).
3. We over pay mediocre players so we don’t have adequate funds to pay free agents. For example I’m a Ferguson fan but why pay him when he’s an average player? Players like that can be found in the 4th-7th rounds and even UDFA.
Also as a side note I am tired of hearing it’s not Dak’s fault that we are paying him elite money. Dak held the Cowboys feet to the fire and they caved. It’s idiotic to not put some of that on Dak. I would have let Dak walk and started over.
Dak has played better this year but let’s be real, Dak can’t carry a team and his salary cap number requires that he do so.
Dallas is not good because of a current lack of talent. Dallas can improve if it gets its players healthy but several spots are fairly thin in terms of quality depth.
