Here are a few of my thoughts and perceived issues presented by the Cowboys' draft selections:
1. I like the trade down even if we didn't get "full" compensation in the trade down. Hindsight is 20/20 but I'm not going to criticize the Cowboys for the move even if the players they passed on turn out to be world beaters. No one knows for sure at this moment how that will play out.
2. There is absolutely no doubt who was the top rated center was on the Cowboys' board was, because they had the pick of the litter and took him. It is a legitimate issue if we took him too early, but if Jerry, the wheeler dealer he is wasn't willing to risk losing him, well then that should tell you how highly the Cowboys had him valued on their board.
3. Unless the whole ZBS switch was just a smoke screen you have to wonder if Frederick really fits in with that scheme. I think that is a legitimate question to ask at this point.
4. The fact that Frederick was the last of a group of offensive linemen seems to indicate that other teams seem to agree that there was a steep drop off in the quality of offensive linemen after Frederick. The fact that the Giants reached for Pugh also indicates that if you wanted one you had to get one early or miss out.
5. Escobar was a bit of a head scratcher. The talking heads seem to think we got great value there, but if we don't use a ton of "13" personnel this year it was a luxury pick. Let's be clear .... he's big, he is supposedly a great receiver, but he is not fast and that MAY be a cause for concern. His 4.8 speed is pedestrian. Every linebacker he comes up against will likely be faster than him. So his upside is as a possession and red zone threat, but not a deep threat or home run hitter. I'm not against the pick, but he went too high for me. Then again if he was the last one on their board that they thought they wanted ....then it was get him here or not get him at all. So the biggest issue I have is will he be fast enough? Mike Williams formerly of USC indicates maybe he was a reach. I hope that is a bad comparison.
6. Williams. I don't follow Baylor football, but he did lead the country in productivity. That is a good sign. If he works out, he not only improves our team, but maybe he helps make Austin expendable which helps with the cap. High reward low risk pick.
7.Wilcox. I love the athleticism, but the question I think you have to ask is was it wise to go with potential here as opposed to a proven performer at safety. Arguably, safety was one of the areas that we need to hit on rather than risk a miss here since we have "potential" already at the position, but no proven performer. Hopefully we guessed right here.
8. Webb. Never heard of him, but athletically he is being compared to Adam "Pac Man" Jones. If he turns out to be a great 4th corner and a slot cornerback then we got great value here. We could have probably moved around a little and had our pick of several QB's here to groom as Romo's heir apparant and saved some money over Kyle Orton after next year. But that move may have cost us Randle in the 5th round too.
9. Randle. I like the fact that we elected to go with a DeMarco Murray Starter Kit rather than a change of pace back. I like getting a backup to Murray and hope Randle can get it done.
10. Holloman. Don't know much about this guy but if we had a 4th round draft grade on the UDFA we paid all the money to this guy must have been pretty high on our board. I guess this will tell us how well our scouting department is doing.
11. The cowboys are being criticized for not "sticking to the board" and taking Floyd who was supposedly the highest rated player on our board. That's what happens in a trade down. You pass up players to get additional picks. No one really knows how this will turn out, but it is sort of silly to say that by trading down we weren't following our board.
