He’s still at $1m this year. The new money is 2027 and it is also incentivized so tonget the full $6m he’ll have performance targets

Basically, next year the Cowboys were going to have to put a restricted free agent agent tender on him. The amount would have probably topped out at $6m, but with more WR deals getting done it could be more.

So, rather than go through the RFA tender process, where going with a cheap tender could lose you the player, they hedged their bets and extended him now to a real, actual extension.

If Fluornoy continues to develop and solidify into the WR3 that he’s already flashed, then it ends up being a really smart play with minimal risk

If he doesn’t, then the 2027 deal has incentives built in that will also protect the team.

Speedkillz explained how they could have done this a year earlier, and in hindsight, that would have been a nice way to get the extra year even cheaper, but this is a really nice, small move that shows the team is doing things the right way.

Not sure what the incentive would be to sign it unless it gives him some guaranteed money this year. Maybe they guaranteed his contract for this year. Otherwise, it makes no sense for him to not bet on himself for next year. If he plays well, then he'd get a restricted tag, and whatever that amount is would be guaranteed.

It works well for them, but there wouldn't be any incentive for the player if this were the case. A restricted FA tender would be fully guaranteed.

I think they must be giving him some guaranteed money, and probably this year, to get him to agree to this deal. I mean, just guaranteeing his salary for this year might be enough. An extension without some kind of guarantee wouldn't mean much to a player because it is the guaranteed money that matters.

If I’m not mistaken, if a player is on the 53 man roster when the season begins, the contract is guaranteed for the year.

I suppose the advantage for him would be to get an extension now so that if he was hurt this year he wouldn’t enter into his RFA year with no safety net.

Hell, I hope they do give him more money. I mean, they are giving BSF $12m guaranteed.

You’re right when it comes to vested veterans with four years in. They are fully guaranteed the first week

Young guys get a weekly check that isn’t guaranteed, but if they have a major injdurt the team can’t just cut them so there is a de facto guarantee in that case. If they get cut for any other reason they are out of luck

Last year a 2nd round tender was $5 million for Bass. So this actually probably saves them money. As a 2nd for 2027 probably would be more than $6 million.
So they get him for 2 years, total of $7 million.

RFA deals are not guaranteed. 5th year tenders are fully guaranteed at time of exercising that tender.

Depends on vet status. 4 years needed to be fully guaranteed after week 1.
Players with under 4 years only get that weeks paycheck/any remaining guaranteed salary(think 1st round picks)

This and it doesn't make team building sense, unless you had a QB on a low rookie deal to offset so much cost going into the offense. Though I wonder why they didn't give him a 2-3 year deal if the plan was to keep him after we either let Pickens walk or trade. This one is a slight head scratcher. Because if Flournoy balls out he gets slightly more expensive. But I guess if he doesn't then we don't have much invested in him.
