Things didn’t go well for Mailk Hooker in 2024. The 29-year-old safety struggled in the Dallas Cowboys secondary, as scheme change and the revolving door of personnel around him took an obvious toll on Hooker’s game, resulting in arguably his worst season since joining the Cowboys in 2021.

After grading inside the top 15 over the previous two seasons, Hooker fell back to earth in 2024, ranking just 43rd among NFL safeties per Pro Football Focus. The season was a departure from previous years largely because of the various roles Hooker was asked to play.

In previous campaigns Hooker predominantly manned the free role in Dan Quinn’s single-high safety scheme. This centerfielder profile showcased his range and ball skills and also protected him from congestion that often encumbers box safeties. Mike Zimmer, Dallas’s defensive coordinator in 2024, changed that, moving his safeties around, sharing their roles and deploying more split safety looks along the way.

Playing on a three-year, $21 million contract that runs through 2026, this is a prove-it year for the veteran. The Cowboys could save money by releasing him over the winter so how he performs this year will likely decide whether he returns in 2026 or not.

This will be a focus year for Hooker on how he is worked into the system and his immediate future after season on cap effects.

Don't look now, but Dallas Cowboys fans are feeling a little bit confident about the 2025 NFL season. Obviously this tends to happen to most franchises in the offseason, especially teams that won big last season, or teams who are getting big-time players returning from injury, or who made big moves in the offseason to build the roster.

The Cowboys fall into some of that with their offseason moves. But they also hired a first-time head coach who has been passed over many times before. A move like that tends to depress optimism in the fanbase, but Brian Schottenheimer has had a very good offseason in terms of roster building, and getting buy-in from his players on a new culture.

9-8 At a minimum and my hunch of our record, we will just squeeze a wild card with it.
10-7 Is where I really want them to be at.
I want a wild card. The HC then can build on that next year.
I don't want this team going 8-9, 7-10 or anything lower, and letting me down.
Waited all summer for footbal, I want a winning season and a game (at least) in the play offs

I have more faith in players and staff. They will be handling many more game changers from the injured season in 24. The injuries here right now are up front and will be quickly clearing up much more quickly. There is depth in the offensive line and workable in the secondary.

Starting with Philadelphia, both teams will be very close to start out. Game changers will dictate up front.

Linebackers

A lot of things can go right.

Another thought -

Clark may not be done just yet. He is having a good showing in camp. Thanks to extra opportunities provided by Murray’s absence (due to the birth of his child), Clark has seen more action and is making plays. He has shown improvement in reading plays, seeing things more quickly than he has before. He had a nice strip on tight end Luke Schoonmaker. He is building a good rapport with new defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus and new linebackers coach Dave Borgonzi.

Eberflus will be his third defensive coordinator in as many years. While he disappeared in Mike Zimmer’s scheme, he had some good moments with Dan Quinn. Now, he’ll have a DC who is one of the league’s best linebacker coaches. If there was ever an opportunity for him to put things together, this would be it.

Can three-time Super Bowl champ make Cowboys roster?​

Darius Harris has had a fortuitous run as an NFL linebacker. His career started in the best place imaginable, signing with Kansas City out of college at the beginning of the Patrick Mahomes era. He brought his experiences to Dallas last season, hoping to find a foothold in a transitioning defense that was suffering through some injury attrition at the time.

Now he's back in Dallas for his first full offseason, under a new coaching regime, hoping to earn a spot on the 53-man roster. The club made several offseason acquisitions at the linebacker position, but despite the fact Harris hasn't seen much on-the-field action, he's survived some initial roster shuffles in order to make his way with the club to Oxnard for training camp.
