Interesting article. So, Jerry's plan was to make MM's new contract contingent on adding Witten to his staff as the heir apparent or coach in-waiting. That's why Jerry wasn't going to offer MM the 5 years he wanted. McCarthy said nope and walked. All indications are that Jerry wasn't expecting this and it makes the whole dynamic of who Jerry hires next more interesting b/c they will almost certainly have to take on Witten knowing that Jerry wants him to be the future HC of the team.

What a mess.

How could it not offend McCarthy that Dallas wanted an unproven coach in Witten waiting in the wings to take over when he fails? We don't blame McCarthy one bit for rejecting the Cowboys' proposal.
McCarthy may have been offended. But he also wasn't achieving what he was hired for either. He had already failed. His playoff record in Dallas was putrid. That being said, I'm sure McCarthy does have some pride and it is understandable that he walked.

What's Jerry's obsession with Witten ? He's a slightly above average HIGH SCHOOL coach ! He has ZERO professional coaching experience. He's probably 5-7 years away from being experienced enough to even consider him for a head coaching job. Funny but sad thing is..... Jerry may be gone before Witten even knows how to coach an NFL team.

Jerry is really going to try the Garrett thing again?

That’s beyond stubborn and into pure stupidity. What’s the benefit? If you want the guy as your HC in four years then let him gain valuable experience elsewhere, not standing on the sidelines in Dallas.

Does this guy have not even the slightest clue that what he wants to do doesn’t work??

It is not so much Witten, it is how much he can pay him and the control over decisions he will have without a fight.

McCarthy should have already been fired.

And I'm glad he said no to Witten being added to his staff, because I don't want Witten in any major role yet either...so for the Cowboys, I think it totally worked out.

It's time to move on to the next coach, McCarthy was always meant to be a stopgap...and he never made a playoff run, so he had to go (and hec, this team was embarrassed in the playoffs, almost looking unprepared).

This is a little off the wall, but the Cowboys always have the best and most disciplined cheerleaders in the entire NFL. Why not give whoever heads that the football HC reins and see if he or she can get the same level of play from the 53 players on the field?

Just b/c MM said "no" doesn't mean Witten isn't going to be on staff next year. The next HC will likely have to add him in some capacity.

What exactly is it about head coaching that requires 5-7 years of apprentice learning? Coaching isn't rocket science. Coaching is motivating and strategizing.

Witten can throw a challenge flag when the people upstairs tell him to.
Witten can give a press conference saying absolute nothing like they all do.
Witten can most likely manage time in games better than McCarthy. Basically who can't?

How many practices has Witten seen firsthand? How many meetings did Witten attend? How many coaches has Witten learned from firsthand as a player?

Might not do it with a new coach. Essentially, Witten was "insurance" in case McCarthy didn't accomplish more than he had the first five years. It's like, look, we didn't get where we wanted to the first five years, so I want a succession plan in place in case we don't over the next few years. Jerry talked about how it might be difficult to sell McCarthy returning to fans, so this may have been his way of doing that. Hey, we hired the heir apparent!

Well he signed his QB to an absurd extension based upon playoff failures...overlooked the need for a Derrick henry...overlooked the need for a WR2...overlooked the need to replace Zach...we now move into an offseason with these same needs, but add a banged up WR1 and injuries to Dak, LB and CB1. Rest assured there is no succession plan for said mentioned players. Heck, right now, we have no QB2 or QB3. Crazy.

It's not only Jerry, it's his stupid kids who likely want Jason Witten as head coach for the near future as well. His kids think just as stupid as Jerry. Pretty sure this is what is keeping Deion (who is way more qualified and has the best coaching traits to reshape this team and players into a playoff successful team) from accepting Jerry's offer. Deion sees the writing on the wall and will not accept being hired as a temporarily coach forced to accept Jason Witten and groom Witten to replace you in 2-3 years. Nope. Deion will never accept that, nor should he. Jerry and his kids are idiots.

I think we should start calling the Front office the 'Insane Cowboy Posse' lol or 'ICP' for short

cowboys fan need to organize a huge boycott against jerry

he is out of his mind why do we have to put up with this non sense
