Interesting article. So, Jerry's plan was to make MM's new contract contingent on adding Witten to his staff as the heir apparent or coach in-waiting. That's why Jerry wasn't going to offer MM the 5 years he wanted. McCarthy said nope and walked.

Yeah, I cant imagine any HC with any balls at all agreeing to mentor his replacement.

This is a little off the wall, but the Cowboys always have the best and most disciplined cheerleaders in the entire NFL. Why not give whoever heads that the football HC reins and see if he or she can get the same level of play from the 53 players on the field?

He's probably 5-7 years away from being experienced enough to even consider him for a head coaching job. Funny but sad thing is..... Jerry may be gone before Witten even knows how to coach an NFL team.

Jerry promoted Kellen Moore to HC after having only one year experience of coaching (of any description), so Jerry probably thinks Witten being a HC (even at High School) is more than enough experience!

McCarthy should have already been fired.

And I'm glad he said no to Witten being added to his staff, because I don't want Witten in any major role yet either...so for the Cowboys, I think it totally worked out.

It's time to move on to the next coach, McCarthy was always meant to be a stopgap...and he never made a playoff run, so he had to go (and hec, this team was embarrassed in the playoffs, almost looking unprepared).

That’s beyond stubborn and into pure stupidity. What’s the benefit? If you want the guy as your HC in four years then let him gain valuable experience elsewhere, not standing on the sidelines in Dallas.

Moore has no real reason to leave Philly. If you think about it that team is likely going to make it to the NFC Championship game or even the Super Bowl. He has another good year in Philly and there won't be any shortage of offers for him after next season. Why would you give that up to go to Dallas and deal with Jerry?

McCarthys tenure was definitely a disappointment. Sure they had 3 straight 12-5 seasons. But they never seemed prepared in big games and would always get out coached. They were also a heavily penalized team.

I think people are just so sick of Jerry. And it really was a dick move blocking him from the bears job if u didn't already have an agreement in place. Good for Mike for leaving this clown show

Right ......Jerry was basically asking him to forget about winning, I need you to mentor Witten for 3 years and move on. The entire setup was clumsy. I can't believe Jerry didn't bother to check MM pulse on this plan until 2-3 days before his contract expired. I'm sure Mike will tell you he would never agree with it and would have no problem telling Jerry if he had asked.

You are right about Dak's postseason but at least it's his floor. In other words, as you just admitted, he can consistently get you to the postseason and that more than be said about the majority of starting QBs but then he needs a lot of help. And no, he isn't worth $60M .......he never was but since Jerry was stupid enough to pay it, no one would have turned it down.
