Like some in here I watched that show about the construction on the stadium. It is suppose to look and "feel" like a Californian themed place so one of those things is that the stadium was placed with the ends to get the breeze off the ocean, that is why it is open ended. I know might sound dumb, but it is a very unique stadium. Also the seating "bowl" is completely independent of the surrounding structure and roof for earthquake reasons, the roof rests on a structure ringed truss around the seating and field.
