There is no rule that prohibits a team owner from talking to a free agent or player on his team. They can discuss player compensation. There is a rule that only the players’ union certified agent can agree to terms. Sans the agent agreeing to the terms the contract cannot be approved by the NFL or NFLPA. Players can represent themselves, but must formally notify the league and Players’ Association of their intention to do so.

Yes, closed shop vs. open shop. I don’t know what the circumstances are to how and where the law(s) apply. The League and NFLPA may get around that by calling it a “service fee” and a condition of employment. Doesn’t smell quite right to me. I’ve always been in a union environment, but on the management side. Decorum prevents me from sharing my sentiments about labor unions here.

I think if it is an attempt to get a signed agreement it can turn into a grievance and monetary penalties. Since the League and Union both must approve all player contracts and the agents expressed consent is required for approval, Jerry’s attitude and comments are not really an issue.
