Cowboys have called to inquire about LB Brooks

I totally agree. They would just need to extend him ASAP so they don’t give up a 3rd for a 1 year rental.
They would get that 3rd back if he left via free agency, but that isn't the point

Waddle was the last player to move in a decent sized trade.

Things are just kind of dead now.

I also firmly believe that part of Jerry’s “all in” plan this year includes playing Pickens on the tag.

He doesn’t want to trade him.
He feels he needs him
He doesn’t want to extend him
Because he can just tag him

Pickens has the misfortune to have missed out on the “Jerry takes care of his guys” version of the owner/GM

He’s got the “cutthroat miser” version.

Parsons wasn’t an outlier. He was the new way Jerry is going to deal with star players
Certainly if you’re not giving Jerry a huge discount. He’s been outwardly campaigning for players to make their own deals without an agent so he can fleece them. I’m shocked that the league hasn’t formally reprimanded him yet.

This.

If you’re trading away a 3rd round pick or better, you’d better be able to keep him long term. And if they intend to tag Pickens again next year, they have to get an extension done with Brooks.

The NFLPA made a tiny squeak after he did it with Parsoks but Goodell made them go to the backyard and cut their own switch, which he then put to good use.

They haven’t twitched since

I heard the holdup is that the Cowboys front office doesn't know if it has a firm commitment from Brooks camp on that 4 year $13 dollars extension they're offering yet.
I don't know if that is accurate or not or where you got that from but that would be a great deal for the Cowboys. With his $8.3M cap hit this year (IIRC) that makes it a 5 year $60M total for the Cowboys. That comes in just below on an AAV basis what some of these other guys signed for and he is a much better player than guys like Dean right now. In 3 or 4 years maybe not, but today it's not really that close.

This is why patience is the key to acquiring Brooks.....I don't think they have any intention of him being on the 2026 roster. As stated before........the 3rd round we got for Osa is more than enough.

They had to get the cap under control moving forward. They now have. Waddle is a good player but Brooks is IMO better although at a less high profile position of course, but more importantly Brooks will cost a lot less if resigned, less than half and close to a third. That's a significant part of it I would guess. Plus trading Brooks now barely clears much cap space this year (only $2.6M). With Miami, who knows, their loss will hopefully be our gain... :starspin:

Sorry, I misunderstood. This came right after the Pickens post, so I thought you were referring to him. Although I think a 3rd for Brooks is a good deal even if he leaves via free agency (we get probably a 4th back so it's Brooks and a late 4th for a late 3rd) I agree if we trade for and then extend Brooks it's the best of both worlds. Another huge aspect of this is we wouldn't need to go into the draft needing to force ILBer.

John Franklin Myers is getting $21 million aav this year and the Broncos are expected to get a 4th round pick for him. The standard will be higher next season. And I doubt any nfl team expects Brooks to make that kind of money.

The Jones abounded free agency bc they don't have the expertise to have any confidence in what they are doing. Free agency is a huge part of success in the NFL. We just don't have a Les Snead or Howie Roseman in the front office. That said, when you sign a player coming off an all-pro season, there is a lot less guess work. We haven't signed a free agent of that caliber since La Ron Glover back in the early 2000's and he worked out just fine.
Well, you can look at it that way ... because I guess it comes down to that. They've said why they abandoned it, though: They believe you overpay for the quality that you get. So they not only decided not to overpay, they decided not to pay much at all. Until the last couple of years, they completely sat out the first few weeks of free agency (the feeding frenzy) even though there are always some reasonably priced FAs signed, relative to the expensive ones. It's a bad way to do business if you are in the business of building the best roster you can.

I have no idea what they’ll get. It really all depends what other teams are willing to give up, info we are not privy to and we can only guess, and my guess would be a third.

But if they keep him this year and let his contract expire in 2027 after the 2026 season, they wouldn’t get a comp for him until the 2028 draft. So I don’t think it’s a consideration for the Dolphins if they really want to get rid of him.
oh, I wasn't aware his contract runs throuygh 2027....but its voidable and he is an UFA...according to spoatrac.

but still, if Pickens fetched a 3rd. he will fetch a 3rd. 5th is for Murray type players.

I would give up a 3rd for him, because we know what we get and worst case scenario if he leaves after next year, we probably get a 3rd back.

The 3rd was talking about the comp pick for Pickens not Brooks

It’s easier to just wait him out.

They say that but they have't won anything either. They haven't even tried it in spite of that they have seen in LA, Seattle, and Philly.

They did try it this offseason, but got beat out of Crosby, Walker, and Dean. So, it's not some organizational philosophy. Not wanting to "overpay" in free agency is a convenient excuse to explain why the team isn't good enough year after year after year.

If they trade for him, you better make sure you can sign him to an extension because if given up a 3rd not doing that for 1 year.

Boy, our Cowboys sure inquire better than any other club in the league. We got the "inquiry" market cornered.

Unlike Pickens, have it agreed to prior to the trade. A non-exclusive franchise tag on Brooks in 2027 is over $30 million, even the transitional tag is over $25 million. And if Pickens is still around not signed to an extension…only one of them can tagged. The other one walks away.
