Well it would help our team out if they don't commit 14 or 15 penalties against the 49ers in the playoffs again. I'm pretty sure teams don't win playoff games with that many penalties.
Teams don't make penalties because they want to.
They do so because of lack of technique, strength, speed, intellect, etc.
All those traits factor into whether your defense is great or not.
Meaning ... when a guard or a tackle moves before the snap, it's usually an indication of lack of concentration or thinking "I need to get out of my stance quicker because (Micah Parson) is fast so I need to be at X spot before he gets there" or "(Myles Garrett) is too strong, so I need to hold him for an extra second otherwise my quarterback is toast."
Or Randy Gregory getting a penalty for tackling the Niners offensive lineman on fourth down, giving the San Fran a first down, critical time we needed for a comeback.
Gregory didn't
INTENTIONALLY set out to commit a penalty. But at that moment, the Niners got the best of him intellectually, physically and emotionally. And because he wasn't equipped to handle his continual beating, he lashed out and got a costly penalty.
Penalties come because a team is insufficient at stopping an opponent.
It's no wonder that the worst teams are the most penalized.
So, I would conclude that the Niners were the better team because they
FORCED us into penalties.
