The Dallas Cowboys lost a player in free agency who may not have been a stat stuffer, but was still integral to the integrity of their defensive line. Chauncey Golston was "the other guy". He wasn't the star edge rusher drafted in 2021; that was Micah Parsons. He wasn't the star defensive tackle drafted in 2021; that was Osa Odighizuwa. But Golston's role as an inside-outside force was a key one for the last two defensive coordinators.

Matt Eberflus needed one of those guys. So when he brought on Aaron Whitecotton as defensive line coach, the DC allowed the New York Jets import to bring a veteran with him capable of playing both inside and outside. In fact, he is possibly an upgrade to Golston despite being a bit longer in the tooth. He certainly has a better pedigree, as Solomon Thomas is not just a former first-round pick but he's a former Top 5 pick.

And although Thomas hasn't lived up to that billing, there's reason to believe he can be a key factor for the new-look defense.

C Golston was a underrated player here.
Yeah he faded down the stretch, but he had a very nice run last season.

I suspect he will go the way of every other Cowboy we let go. Probably won’t ever hear from him again.
You're probably right, and I doubt Golston duplicates that production this year. Good depth guy that you dont want to overpay for.

I’d have rather had Golston, Poona Ford, AND a Hankins-type for the same money they are paying just Osa, but they don’t consult me.

Osa is it going to suddenly become a stud because he is paid that way, but Jerry doesn’t get that.

“I pay him to be.” Doesn’t mean they will. Demarcus Lawrence didn’t become Charles Haley just because you gave him 100 million.

You will def hear from him twice a year he’s on the Giants. He was under rated I wanted to bring him back.
Dorance Armstrong, Gallimore, Collins, Canty, Hatcher…..we won’t miss him. He’s a jag. You don’t pay the Gholstons you draft their replacements…..

Also worth noting he’s currently projected as a back up linebacker in the 3/4…no one even knows what position to put him At leave those guys alone.

You are talking about an owner who said that because Dak is the highest paid, hes the best.....

Based on his production....his pay was warranted. You can debate if we should've paid but he's the one good DT we have.....60 pressures and 4.5 sacks for a interior linemen......there's a small list of guys doing it and he's one of them.

Gholston was trash to be a 3rd round pick. "position flex" usually means you cant do one very good, or you would. He didn't have enough bend or speed to play outside, and was too small nor powerful enough to play inside. They knew this when they drafted him. The below sums up his career. Whoever this DL coach was that NFL quoted was spot on.

Draft Bio Weaknesses
  • Below-average power and play strength.
  • Needs to play with better knee bend at point of attack.
  • Struggles to anchor his edge.
  • Consistently bounced off his spot by kick-out blocks.
  • Below-average pop into contact.
  • Feet are heavy in his change of direction.
  • Pursuit speed is nothing special.
  • Doesn't generate enough rush power from lower half.
  • Firm punch can end his attempts at an edge rush.

Golston was nothing special. A 3rd rounder who could never become a real starter. If he had the same deal in Dallas or Philly, he'd be in the top 15 in cap hit. He's a backup getting starter money.

Solomon Thomas has been the same player his whole career. Mediocre but passable pass rusher. Below average to outright bad run defender

He can at least be a better run defender in this scheme.

Remember, Eberflus is a bit like Dan Quinn. His personnel moves don't make sense until you see the scheme in action.

Fowler, Wilson, even Mukuamu at times. Like, I could see Mukuamu playing some slot corner in this scheme, maybe backing up Bland.

Thats hopium. Thats just assuming a coach is going the player into something he has never been in his career. He even has the same DL coach he had in NY
