I think they were interested in him in the 2012 draft, possible Berny replacement.

Martin is a 'newby' in the offensive line makeup. I assume that this is a check to remove some of the time and energies involved with getting Martin up to speed as a backup center. He can develop those skills over a few years, and change needs. But for a Pro Bowl lineman, I can see the Cowboys' current directions. It would improve the depth, and take away yet another need position for a drafted selection.

Smart player who can play G and C. Not physically strong, but can play angles pretty well. Wouldn't be a bad depth signing at all.

Not a terrible signing if it happens...No worries if not. There are several nice C/G's in the mid-rounds of this draft.
One of those 3 comp picks in the 6th might be a good place to find a cheap one.

No reason not to do both. Ideally you want a young guy to come in and take a job. Not like Looney is going to get a huge guarantee or anything
