I agree Fletch...I liked Martin & I thought Barnes was pretty much useless as a blocker...

We NEED an upgrade at that spot!

Anderson might retire & couldn't play FB every down anyway...

I wouldn't spend a 6th or 7th round pick on Matthews when I will most likely be able to get him as an undrafted free agent.
Ah yes, the late round "throw away" picks. I won't go to the obvious late rounder (and recent Super Bowl QB) but I'd like to mention another recent damn good late rounder: David Givens-WR. If we can get a starter at FB in the 6th-7th rounder, how good would that be for us? Will Mathews can be that starter for us. Let's NOT overlook the importance of the FB position like so many teams do..... :skins:

The fact of the matter is FB is NOT an important position. Period. And that's coming from a FB for a semi-pro football team. We just aren't very important. If you can run well, catch well, AND block well then your worth a draft pick. If you only do one thing well then you're an undrafted rookie FA.

And you compared a WR and a QB to a friggin' FB. That's just ridiculous.

Wow. I wonder if anyone ever told Moose johnston that..... And actually, my comparison was about a WR (Givens) who made, shall I say, some contribution to a super bowl team although he was just a lowly 6th rounder.....My whole point was that if we can pick-up a starter in the 6th or lower rounds, that would be great, no matter what position it is..... :skins:

First of all, Moose played years ago.

Second of all, Will Matthews is not Moose Johnston.

Third, there will be better players available then Matthews, I don't care if it's the last pick in the 7th round.

Well I'm glad to hear it, because I'd never heard of Matthews before until I saw him in the Senior Bowl. I thought he looked pretty good, and was bigger than I thought.

Maybe he'd at least be worth one of those compensatory 6th rounders Adam says we have coming. :)

will matthews will get drafted at some point in the later rounds and i hope it is dallas that gets him. us not having a true fullback showed last year. barnes isn't nothing special but will matthews is he can catch the ball out of the backfield, has decent speed, and contrary to what some of you think he is a devastating blocker.ask cedric benson and see what he has to say about him.

1. "Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it..."

2. How can you be sure of that? Did you know how good Moose was going to be when he came out?

3. I think he'll (Mathews) prove you wrong. At least that's my opinion.....

Anyone know how many FBs were drafted last year? Just curious. I wouldn't be surprised if no more then 3 FBs were drafted last year.

You're right, 3 FBs got drafted last year... Mike Karney in the 5th, Thomas Tapeh in the 5th, and Sean McHugh in the 7th...

Of course, last year's draft crop of fullbacks was the worst in years, and that may have had something to do with it... consider that in 2003, there were 6 FBs draft, 8 in 2002, 5 in 2001 and 4 in 2000...

IOW, in a "normal" year, you can expect 4-6 FBs to be drafted, and in a good year, as many as 8... right now, I'm guessing about 4-5 FBs will be drafted, because this group looks a little better than last year's did...

So the question becomes, is Will Matthews the 4th or 5th best FB on some teams' boards??

The other day they were having a discussion on the NFL channel about the use of FB's and how teams seem to have less of a need for them. The comment was that TE's have gotten bigger and faster and teams tend to carry more TE's now who can also be serve as an H-back rather than use the roster spots on FB's. It was Mayock and Eisen talking I believe.
