Cowboys' Jerry Reveals Firm Stance on Flag Football in Olympics

There is money to be made and an easy marketing opportunity for the league so they will be all over it. I kinda hate it, but money speaks louder than my opinions.

It's a completely different game, some of these NFL guys are going to get embarrassed trying it. Most American fans already tend to hate flag football as we saw when they tried it for the pro bowl, but I'm sure there is some appeal internationally and even the very young generation in america that is playing more flag than tackle football right now.

USA would have just about nobody to play against. Most of the world does not play American Football. Canada, Germany, USA and some make shift teams out of more European countries but the rest of the world doesn't care for Football. Silly to make it an Olympic sport. Even more silly that it's flag Football and not real football.... yawn.
 
Next, no baseball in the Olympics, but they will have a home run derby. Dunk contest instead of basketball. Then dodgeball, tetherball, hot dog eating and tag will all be added as new sports. Hide and Seek is being considered for the future.

I don’t like the idea of flag football in the Olympics but I’m more of an Olympic traditionalist so that’s a “me” problem.

Agree in that it is a different game as there is a learned skill in grabbing a flag and in contorting your body in a way to make your flag hard to grab. To me it’s not really football so let people who work at this (flag football) craft compete. Doesn’t need to be our true footballers.

You can play either side of the fence regarding potential injuries. Does it place players in the position for potential injury - yes. Then again, guys like Micah will probably be partaking in an activity that places them in harms way that doesn’t afford them the opportunity to compete on the Olympic stage. If you’re gonna go down, go down for country and glory I guess.

Anyone remember the name Robert Edwards? He was an NE RB that was playing in the Pro bowl rookie flag football game and he blew out is ACL, MCL and PCL essentially ended his career before it got going.

If you’re an NFL owner would you want to see your investments risking injury for a sport that does nothing for your team.

I think recently retired guys should be playing. If active NFL players want to play then maybe Roger should set something up where teams get cap relief if a player gets hurt. Easy for him to say NFL guys should play when it’s not his investment at risk.

Recently retired guys wouldn't be competitive enough. I'd rather go with young guys who barely missed the cut, at least for the speed and endurance positions. Retired QBs, and some Linemen maybe.

Key phrase: 'as concerned'. He does not say anything definitive, only inferring his concern players may be participating in the Olympics instead of NFL-related activities (i.e. practice, preseason, regular season, etc.).

He further added having a level of concern for players possibly suffering injuries that he did not consider as high. He clarified his level of concern was based on flag football, which can be logically assumed is not a sport he is not worried will create (significant) injuries.

Jones would have a firm stance if he said something like, "Flag football is an American sport. The Olympics will help spread it worldwide. I am sure there will be NFL players who will make sure American flag football will be the best in the world." He didn't. Instead, he talked about NFL players not suiting up because of their flag football schedule.

Not far fetched but your doubting. The European football league had quite a few fans and set a foundation in Europe.

As to similarities in games, rugby is wide spread and actually replicates things in sport to the game of football.

Some sports do evolve.

And honestly the bolded part is what I really don't like. A guy like Micah should not even be considered for a flag team. Yes, hes an excellent athlete and can probably do OK, but hes not a prime pick for this type of setup. He probably will be simply because hes a star NFL player and marketable for this type of event, but really this is where you want the KaVontae Turpin types...probably even the slightly lesser talented Turpin types who cant stay in the league.

Well, the 2028 Olympics is from July 14th through July 30th. So, they would be missing practice and training camp. No pre-season games are played then, except for maybe the Hall of Fame game which is always earlier than the other preseason games.

What's your point here? We know it has been accepted. that is the entire premise of this thread.

Call me insane, but I don't view FLAG FOOTBALL as a sport worthy of being placed beside the canonical Olympic sports like Track and Field, Weightlifting, Swimming, Gymnastics, Athletics, etc.

I just think the field of Olympic competitions has bloated far past what really makes sense. Breakdancing, Rock Climbing, and Skateboarding were all insane to begin with and this is just another absurd entry that waters down the event.

No country in the world even plays Flag Football seriously, including the US. Even here it has tiny participation and is largely something that 8 year olds do before they put on the helmet and shoulder pads.

Yes Rugby is popular world wide. Football is not. It's just a fact. Rugby players would laugh attempting to play Flag Football.

They need to keep these two as separate businesses. I could see it like a potential developmental league for skill players.

No way NFL players are going to be good playing in two different leagues and not have an off season.

Not talking about league play, that I agree would not be something the NFL would allow. The discussion is about playing in the olympics. That I think players would be all over if the opportunity came up, especially since it really wont effect anything NFL schedule wise except for mini camps which a lot of veterans dont like to attend anyways.

We could send college players, retired players and everything in between and still win the Olympics.

To start a new sport in the Olympics, I would think at least initially they would want it to be somewhat competitive. If we send NFL stars, the score will be 200 to nothing.
 
What a dumb idea.

Rugby is about as close to flag football the rest of the world gets.

And the entire point of selling American Football is the physical element of the game.

I'm not wasting my time watching dudes grab each other's butts to get the flag.
