Keith Smith won’t go away. The linebacker, who has been cut five times by the Cowboys since he first joined them in May 2014, made the 53-man roster Saturday.

In his latest stint with the club, Smith showed he belonged. After signing July 31, Smith excelled in the preseason. He led the team with 16 tackles and also forced a fumble. A reserve defender with position flexibility, Smith figures to make his greatest contributions on special teams.

“He’s always working, and he’s always got a go-get-it attitude,” linebackers coach Matt Eberflus said. “That’s what you want.”...

I liked him out of all the ILB's I've seen this preseason not named Lee. Even Gachkar.

I don't know what he looks like against starter quality talents, but he definitely stood out playing with the lesser teams. He pops off the screen a lot. That's like one of the two things I look for in my very amateur evaluation of linebackers. Do they make plays around the line of scrimmage? and do they exhibit some kind of superior trait? Smith looks like a good athlete and he's got size. The way he moved was really noticeable to me.

I like his toughness out there...

Agreed, mental as well as physical. And the Cowboys have done well with players named Smith. However Smith (and Brinkley, McCray and even Whitehead) is going to be on pins and needles ALL season long because bottom of the roster guys cannot be complacent. That's where the churning happens.

He's earned it. He looked especially motivated against the 49ers.

If there's one thing you can say about this guy, it's that he doesn't quit. He kept returning to Dallas after having been cut five times. He has decent size and speed, is able to slip blocks capably and fly to the ballcarrier. What more can you ask from a youngster than being highly productive? He has excellent instincts and arrives quickly without hesitation. Who knows -- perhaps this will be the time he finally manages to stay put with the Cowboys.
