“The [pass rush] package has been watered down. I don’t see a lot of the plays that they ran early,” said Ware to Sports Seriously. “When you first start the season, you start doing all these NASCAR, crazy packages and you see it become really effective and then you get comfortable.

You get comfortable with ‘alright, well then we’re just going to put guys here and say we’re going to beat you.’ Yes, we can do that. But that’s when the offenses can scheme and say ‘we’re going to double team Micah and slide to DeMarcus Lawrence.”

The numbers back that up, through their first 12 games of the season Dallas was averaging four sacks a game, which was tops in the NFL. In the last 5, that average has dipped to just over one sack a game.

“I think we gotta get back to being dynamic. You got a lot of dynamic players on that defense. Don’t water it down, let those guys go out and do what they need to do,” said Ware. “Yes, big plays will be given up, but the big plays will happen [on defense too], so Dak can score those points.”

I trust in Ware. Also facts don't like. We have not been getting near the pressure we got in the first half the of the season. We all suspected our guys are worn down. Maybe what it is has a lot to do with coaching. Seems to me if you have a bad corner that has zero coverage skills you would have to play zone and put as much pressure on the passer as possible. If we don't hassle Brady he will carve up the weak link in our secondary.

I do think some of it has been because of the run defense and Cowboys have made adjustments to slow down the run game. I also think issue with CB after Brown went down has played a part. No doubt Cowboys need to come up with ways to get that pass rush going

Defense went downhill after Micah got hurt. He's been nursing that groin and everyone is waiting for him to lead the way.

I’d like to see a rotation of our big defensive tackles lining up over the center and driving him like a blocking sled. Put a lineman in Brady’s lap a few times and it will be more effective.

Brady loves to step up and pressure up the middle is the only way to get him rattled

Hopefully Quinn does not fall in love with just Parsons

And Lawrence having a broken bone in his foot, Armstrong having a busted knee, Williams being ineffective since his car crash etc doesn’t have anything to do with it?

That's interesting. I don't watch game film or anything, but watching the games live I thought they were trying the same stunts/alignments but just weren't as effective later in the season.

Pretty much. Dallas had been running a lot of zone and in the early part of the season, not blitzing much, but generating pressure like you said via stunts.

These were the numbers in October:

The Dallas Cowboys have one of the few elite defensive fronts which can wreak havoc on opposing quarterbacks without bringing extra bodies. In fact, the Cowboys lead the NFL with 68 pressures on four-man rushes, per Sports Info Solutions. Besides the 49ers with 67, an obvious inclusion at the top of this list, no other team has more than 55 pressures with four-man rushes. The Cowboys' 36.1% pressure rate with four-man rushes trails only, of course, the 49ers….
Regarding the Rams game:

In total, the Cowboys generated 28 pressures and five sacks on the day. All but three pressures and one sack came on four-man rushes. Those 25 four-man rush pressures were the most by any defense in a single game this season, according to Sports Info Solutions. Better yet, the Cowboys' previous two matches against the Giants and Commanders also rank top-12 by that same measure. The only game in which the Cowboys have fallen short as a four-man rush unit this season was against the Buccaneers in the opener, but the lack of production in that game had much more to do with Tom Brady's short time to throw than the pass rush not being able to deliver.

That was exactly how NE got beat in their super bowls. Pressure up the middle is the only way you could beat Brady in his prime.

They made changes in order to improve run defense after giving up 240 & 207 rushing yards to the Bears & Packers.

A big part of those changes was a more read and react style instead of play the run on the way to the QB style.

Wait until the RB does not get the handoff then rush the passer.

Far less stunts (DE crossing over with DT) because many big run plays allowed were due to being out of position on stunts.

It is simple to see for anyone that focuses on all snaps by the DL for a late season game vs an earlier season game.

I don't think.most ex-players even bother to review games.

The caveat is that it made sense to over-focus on run defense due to the opponent QBs after the Packers game thru to game #17.

Obviously they'll go back to a pass defense 1st approach vs Brady.

If teams can run, it just exposes this defense. You can’t bring pressure consistently with 4 over a season, if you got guys like ours. The offense needs to put up points so the opposing offense is forced into known passing situations.

If you had the choice for the Cowboys defense to create inside pressure:
Aaron Donald jumping a gap.
Or
Vita Vea bulldozing an OC into the QB.

Answer: Aaron Donald gets there 3x faster.

For the Cowboys:
DLaw inside on passing downs.
Or
Hankins playing on passing downs.

They made changes to patch up the run game. They’ve gotta be able to stop the run in order to rush the passer. Week 1 they ran all over us and our pass rush was rendered useless.

Hopefully they can’t run and we can start getting exotic. Of course that also depends on CB2.

Too bad we don’t have Aaron Donald.

This reminds me of ‘Remember the Titans’. When Denzel’s character says, “they are ahead of Yoast. You gotta get a hold of it or I’m taking over.”

Get ahold of it Quinn.
