Smith doesn't think Dallas' coaching or roster-building approach will put the Boise State All-American in a position to succeed

Heisman Trophy runner-up and Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty. The Frisco, Texas, native totaled 2,601 yards rushing this past college football season, which is the second-most in a season in Division 1 football history.

However, the Cowboys and the NFL's all-time leading rusher Emmitt Smith doesn't think Dallas currently provides the right environment for Jeanty to have success as a pro.

"If he comes to the Cowboys right now, he's going to get beat up. I don't think we're ready. We don't have the right mindset. We don't have the right commitments," Smith said Thursday on the Maggie and Perloff show. ..."I think we're drafting, we're drafting exciting pieces. Exciting pieces that get fans all 'oh we got Ashton Jeanty, oh we are going to be able to run the ball.'"

As the team stands now, he's right. However, a few solid FA signings, and they'll be ready. A nice OT or RG, and a good #2 wr would make a big difference. I'm still hoping for a top notch DT to fall to them in the 1st though.

Definitely need a high quality player at the position, doesn't necessarily have to be Jeanty, but I won't be upset if it was especially if we sign a couple of decent FAs at either OL, DT, or WR.

He is right. That's a luxury pick. It will win some games in the regular season but nothing major (December big games/playoffs)
Totally bro.

Saquon’s 118 yards rushing and 3 TDs didn’t help in the Conference Championship win against Washington.

Saquon’s 205 yards rushing and 2 TDs didn’t help in the Divisional Round against the Rams.

Saquon’s 119 yards rushing didn’t help in the Wilcard win against Green Bay.

You keep whining about things you’re demonstrably wrong about.

I’m not a Jeanty advocate but I am interested in learning more about this mindset I keep seeing.

Can you tell me what a non “luxury” pick would be that would help us win in the playoffs?

If Jeanty ends up being an all pro who scores 15 TDs a year, is he really a “luxury” pick? Or is he the type of playmaker that 32/32 teams are looking to add to their roster? Is having playmakers a luxury?

As far as playmakers go, this team essentially has Lamb, and that’s about it. Aren’t playmakers a “need” for this team?

Building up the oline. Saquan is running behind the best oline in the league. Saquan behind our line would do minimal playoff damage.

Once oline and front 4 are solidified THEN you worry about the back.

The Cowboys have built up the OL? They’ve gone OL in the first the last 2 out of 3 years.

Can’t this team figure out how to fix the OL without spending a 1st round pick on it? There are only a couple OTs in this draft worth a first who will probably be gone at our pick, and we just went OT in the first last year.

Idk if OG needs much help.

Unfortunately it doesn't seem like it lol. But I get the frustration. I just can't take this team seriously trotting out Steele and Guyton in pass pro. Guyton will have to make a massive leap.

Never saw Rico beat up. Dallas needs a top RB it will help take pressure off QB. Every team Dallas has had success are teams when we had a top RB.

Look at Saquon on the Giants. Bijan on the Falcons. Jacobs on the Raiders.

There are more important positions that need to be addressed to increase the probability that the RB will have an opportunity to succeed in the playoffs.

Jimmy Johnson said you need guys who score touchdowns or keep the other team from scoring touchdowns. A Pro Bowl running back can do that for you. The Eagles would not be in the Super Bowl without Barkley.

PS. Not saying he is Barkley, but he is hands down the best back in the draft.

Jeanty wouldn’t be going to a team with a multidimensional running attack, a top 2 oline, and multiple star receivers that force the safeties into a shell on every play.

Dallas went 3-5 with their starting QB healthy, and 7-10 overall with a 1000 yard RB. They need a lot more help before a Jeanty can do the things you’re citing.

Jeanty is one of the top players in the draft and he is well worth pick 12. He is too good to pass on.

He’d be going to a team that had a middling no-name RB (Dowdle) put up 1,000+ yards/4.6 YPC despite having a limited backup QB at the helm for more than half the season with a barely functional passing attack.
