Cowboys legend Emmitt Smith feels Dallas isn't 'ready' to draft star RB Ashton Jeanty

The argument isn’t “Jeanty serves no value to dallas” the argument is “Is Jeanty superior to a franchise DE, franchise DT, or franchise LT?”

Let me ask it in a different way. If you hit on Ashton Jeanty, would you be comfortable in 4 years with paying him 40, 50 million dollars a year?
Why do you assume a franchise DT or DE will be available at pick 12?

You’d have a much stronger argument if we were drafting 2nd or 3rd overall.

Every player in the top ~20 is potentially a franchise caliber player. You don’t draft a dude at 11 or 14 or 17 and hope he’s just an okay player

Every player available in the draft is potentially a franchise player; you’re not saying anything.

Not every draft has the same number of blue chip prospects. This one has less of those than usual.

Again, you’re acting like this comes down to Mason Graham, Abdul Carter, or Jeanty at pick #12.

That’s not going to be a dilemma we have to worry about.

You don’t put Jeanty up against those guys though, because it’s a no contest. You put him up against the second and third tier lineman, ends, etc, and you still take them. Because he’s a running back

Unless you think he is a generational player; then you pick him.

Where would the Boys have been in the 90's without Emmitt?

and yes Emmitt would make a huge difference in todays NFL as well

He is right. That's a luxury pick. It will win some games in the regular season but nothing major (December big games/playoffs)

I agree..

I won’t complain if we get Jeanty but he’s terrible value.

This RB class is loaded.

Jeanty should be bpa if available.

We didn't have a great OL when Emmitt was drafted. I would argue he made the OL look better than it actually was .

Yeah, no. You don’t have to take another position. I’m not with that oversimplified “he’s just a RB” perspective.

There’s no other position on the field that can step in immediately and provide an outsized impact and production faster than a quality RB.

Yes, of course you have to address other positions but you can’t force a square peg through a round hole. If Jeanty is the best player at his position…at a position of need (RB)…I’m not going to bypass him for the sake of taking the 3rd-4th best lineman.

I would probably draft Jeanty if Grant isn’t there. It is a tough choice between the two but a stud DT should be more valuable. It is a crapshoot though….

If that's the case we should consider offers, but draft Jeanty if the offer isnt good enough. Like last year, the value/evaluation isnt Guyton (as a latter 1st Rd), its Guyton +Beebe.

Jeanty's value will (hopefully) be the effect on oppositions Safeties and LB, make them honest. Id prefer taking Jeanty over a CB/S....which could be the only true 1st Rd graders left.

he says we're not built for it...then says he thought zeke and dowdle could have carried us the rest of the season.
dowdle was fine...but zeke was a waste.
we can not ignore the rb spot in the draft again.
at some point, they have to draft a rb.
i think our oline can handle it.

It's obvious that the will draft a running back..
1. They need one
2. The draft is loaded at running back.

Smith doesn't think Dallas' coaching or roster-building approach will put the Boise State All-American in a position to succeed

Heisman Trophy runner-up and Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty. The Frisco, Texas, native totaled 2,601 yards rushing this past college football season, which is the second-most in a season in Division 1 football history.

However, the Cowboys and the NFL's all-time leading rusher Emmitt Smith doesn't think Dallas currently provides the right environment for Jeanty to have success as a pro.

"If he comes to the Cowboys right now, he's going to get beat up. I don't think we're ready. We don't have the right mindset. We don't have the right commitments," Smith said Thursday on the Maggie and Perloff show. ..."I think we're drafting, we're drafting exciting pieces. Exciting pieces that get fans all 'oh we got Ashton Jeanty, oh we are going to be able to run the ball.'"

I don’t like the wait approach. This is this process crap Garrett use to talk about. It doesn’t take long to contend…

Jeanty wouldn’t be going to a team with a multidimensional running attack, a top 2 oline, and multiple star receivers that force the safeties into a shell on every play.

Dallas went 3-5 with their starting QB healthy, and 7-10 overall with a 1000 yard RB. They need a lot more help before a Jeanty can do the things you’re citing.
Cowboys were injury riddled in that 3-5 stretch. With no rushing attack.

it was obvious last year also and they ignored it.
with the new coaches...especially the oc and potential oline coach from k-st...it looks like they won't make the same mistake this time.

a good running game cures all ills.
this coaching staff seems to be a step in the right direction in my opinion.
