IRVING – The Cowboys are close to a deal that would send them back to Oxnard, Calif., for training camp this summer, according to two sources.
The Cowboys trained at the Alamodome last year, but a scheduling conflict with the San Antonio facility has forced the club to look at different locations.

From 2004 to 2006, the Cowboys trained at the River Ridge facility in California next to a Marriott Residence Inn. They also spent two weeks there in 2001.

Official training camp dates have not been set, but it generally begins the last week of July.

City and team officials met earlier this month about the logistics of holding training camp in Oxnard again. The players and former Cowboys coach Bill Parcells enjoyed training camp in California because the cooler temperatures led to more conducive work in a self-contained area.

The Cowboys signed a five-year deal with the city of San Antonio last year, knowing they would probably have to find another location in 2008. The deal with San Antonio runs through 2011.

Briefly: Safety Roy Williams played in a limited role in Sunday's Pro Bowl because of flu-like symptoms that slowed him down much of the week. ... Cornerback Evan Oglesby and receiver Isaiah Stanback are rehabbing from shoulder surgery performed after the season. ... Left guard Kyle Kosier is recovering from right ankle surgery.

Maybe it doesn't bother the coaches or players one iota.

But for me the inability of this team to secure a stable, consistent training camp location is a potential distraction for the team. Of epic proportions? Of course not. But at least a constant nagging irritation.

And I cannot understand what is so hard about figuring out what you want in a TC site, making a list of candidates and getting this thing settled.

Come on folks, we're the Dallas Cowboys. It shouldn't be this hard.

I really wish the Cowboys would have camp closer to Dallas, if not IN Dallas.

I am a little bias here because I live in San Diego but there is a lot to be said for the weather in Southern California - perfect outdoor practice conditions - warm and sunny but not to the point that you have to worry about people having severe health issues due to the heat.

I am not a big fan of having the team be inside in the A/C.

Not to mention, the Landry teams used to come to CA and if my memory serves me correctly, they did pretty well!

I don't doubt that yentl911. Part of the reason I wish they would come back is, it seems like a lot of local fans have sort of lost touch with the team.

Maybe I'm off here, but there are a lot of people here that I know who simply don't like the Cowboys, or just don't care about them either way. I think part of it is, they don't see much of the team, other than watching a game on tv, or being there live.

Of all of my friends, there are maybe, MAYBE, 6 or 7 of us, and I work with a lot of people that are either fans of other teams, or just don't care about the Cowboys in general.

Having training camp in DFW, I think would get people out there, and get excited about seeing them play.

I don't like this thread!

Stay in S.A. please Mr. Jones

I agree with you CrazyCowboy. I've lived here in San Antonio since Sept 2003 and I've only seen them here for training camp once. I really enjoyed attending training camp last year.

I doubt it will matter if they come to the DFW area for TC. The haters will always be haters and if they don't care then they will likely never care. The problem is that in the DFW area there are so many people who were originally from out of state and they came to Texas with preconcieved attitudes about the Cowboys.

We just have to keep trying to win the hearts and minds of the young ones ;)

They're America's Team, not Texas' Team. :D You Texans get them all regular season, so it's only fair that us Californians get them for training camp.

Hell, I could make the argument that we should get a couple regular season home games too... but that's for another day and another thread. ;) I guarantee we'd show more passion than the Texas Stadium crowd!
